What specs should i be looking for when making a purchase for an obd bluetooth connector? I have see that they can be sold at different prices, what is the reason for this?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is an OBD Bluetooth connector and what is it used for?

Isn't bluetooth included in the car for phone connectivity?

In the past, I have used an OBDII connector for coding different functions on a car (not a Mini).

Well i don't know much but, it is an adapter that connects to the cars OBD port and connects to an Android smartphone using the bluetooth interface. And if im correct, there are wifi adapters that connect to Apple smartphone AKA the iPhone!

The cheaper ones aren't very reliable and are illegal copies. They aren't illegal to own though. I use one with my Sony Experia Ray to provide extra instruments.

Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs

I am not sure about oil pressure, but water temperature you can definitely see. Basicly whatever information is made available to the DME over the CAN bus, you can see.

There is also a more specialized app for Android devices, called BMWhat which is also able to access modules and parameters beyond the OBD specifications. Much like a mobile version of DIS or ISTA-D. It also supports coding, but only for some specific pre-defined functions. Currently it doesn't work well with the MINI but it may get better.

yape, simply plug the OBD2 scanner into the car DLC, and play
DashCommand + WIFI OBD2 adapter working on iOS system
Torque app + Bluetooth OBD2 scanner working on Android system

If you have an Android smart phone (or other Android device e.g. small tablet) then you can download the TORQUE app and connect to the OBD port on your Mini with one of the many Bluetooth OBD11 readers that are for sale on ebay etc.

The Torque app gives a customisable 'dashboard' display and will show any data reading that is being sent by one of the sensors on the engine.

You can also read and cancel fault codes either using Torque or one of the other bits of software that usually accompanies the OBD2 reader.

The wide variation in pricing of the readers is usually down to where they are coming from, and perhaps the quality of the software they come bundled with.

I bought a 12 reader from ebay, and it works fine with the Torque app.

BMWhat, which is now marketed as Carly for BMW and Mini works well with my daughter's 2010 Cooper S and the app is available for both Smartphone and iphone users. This app can also perform service interval resets and battery registration on many models using in-app purchases, which generic apps like Torque cannot do. You need to be aware that BMW changed diagnostic protocols on their cars from KCAN to DCAN on 3/2007. I have used a Generic ELM 327 v1.5 WiFi interface successfully with BMWhat/Carly on DCAN cars.

There is a free Lite version of BMWhat/Carly for BMW but the full version is not free. Torque Pro is not BMW specific software and neither is DashCommand - nor do they have any coding capabilities for Mini. They also only read generic "P" codes rather than true BMW fault codes.
