shift lever spinning around

Wanted to see whats underneath the leather cover that "dresses" the gear lever so i tried to unscrew it. Gave it a hard spin and now its all spinning round without stopping to lock in one position. Did something break?

Sounds like:
1. There may be a locking nut mechanism that you've upset. Are there two nuts on the same thread? Possibly one locking nut underneath the gear knob. If so, tighten then against each other.
2. Is there an Allen-key arrangement on a locking nut or on the base of the gear knob? If so, tighten the Allen key.

The workshop manual says do not remove this just to see whats underneath.
To remove the gear lever gaiter, first remove the gear knob, by pulling it straight up, do not twist!.
Then using a pry tool pry up the gaiter bezel ring, do not twist!
When reinstalling note the spacing of the retaining lugs as they are uneven and press it back in.
If youve twisted it youve probably broken the lugs off or sprained them and you might now need a new gaiter ring bezel?

Guys all is well, i gave it a hard slam on the knob and its fixed now!
