What issues?

Yesterday I was looking at a 2009/59 cooper s with 35k miles. Now the car seems fine but I was just wondering what I should be looking out for? Any known problems, seemingly I've been told early models had issues with using lots of oil but that has been sorted by now? Is that the case ? Any info appreciated, thanks Ben

High oil consumption is not the only problem with the N14 engine. Google "r56 timing chain tensioner" and "r56 carbon build up".

I'd look for a MCS with the N18 engine.

You can verify which engine a R56 MCS by entering the last 7 digits of VIN on the following site:

Not had any issues with our 2011 JCW. It does 'use' a little oil. As for carbon build up, I thought that goes with the territory of all direct injection engines.

I just bought an '09 S and love it. I stopped by the dealer and talked with the service adviser about possible issues. He did say to look out for oil consumption due to the turbo. His advice was to check the oil weekly, do not run it low, use a high quality oil (says Castrol is recommended on the dipstick mount point), and to drive it hard to keep the deposit collection low. He said that when the cars are "babied" is when the carbon buildup is worst.

Low oil level is contributing factor that leads to the timing chain tensioner failure/issues.

I'm going to follow that advice and keep up on the oils and drive the snot out of it...
