I've just got a cooper a after previously having a standard cooper, my cooper had a cat back system built on it and sounded the nuts...
I've just had one built for the cooper s and it doesn't sound any different and the guy said it can't be made any louder as the turbo acts as a silencer, is this true?
Have I been ripped off and how can I make my car sound like the new f56 challenge 210 ?
You can make it louder but like Creepy coupe said, the turbos will baffle the sound by chopping up the exhaust gases. That is one complaint many people have about newer cars being turbo for fuel economy. Naturally aspirated motors have always sounded better in my opinion but I love turbo whistle and flutter so I don't mind trading it in for a different exhaust note.
That being said, I'd use Youtube and search "Mini Cooper S Loud Exhaust", or something like that, and find the right setup for your taste. I personally want to highlight the turbo noise with a quieter exhaust note. Other ways you can affect the sound are: add an air intake, down pipe, remove resonators, or swap out for a high-flow cat. Anything is possible, you may just have to pay for it.
Under revs, it's beautiful and pretty much where I want it, however what I'm aiming for is something along the lines of an M240i, where it has that growl/ hum on start up, under no revs. I basically want to hear that it has an aftermarket exhaust without having to be rev'd.
I'm considering completely straight-piping and removing the rear baffle, but anyone got any other suggestions...
I was thinking of removing the resonator from my JCW, how much difference does it really make. Obviously you think it doesn't make much difference, but does it cause the exhaust to drone, or does it enhance the crack and pop? Did it make any difference to the drivability- any engine error lights?
I replaced the Turbo-intercooler muffler with a suitable diameter/length piece of stainless steel exhaust pipe, instantly changed the turbo whistle to more noticable, but not dramaticaly. I understand that to get a louder turbo whistle you need to set up a cold-air intake style air filter box, although the standard intake on the JCW is next to the left headlight, which is about as cold as it comes, but might be a little restrictive.
Note that the JCW muffler is straight-through, but replacing it with straight exhaust pipe may make it louder, but as previous posters have said, the turbo acts as a form of muffler anyway.
Let us know how it sounds with a straight-through system, if you get it done.
Cheers!
