Death Rattle...

Hi all,

I've been reading a lot about this issue on the R56 mini's but I had one question I couldn't find an answer too...

Is it only the cooper S that was affected or the was the non charged cooper also affected.

I ask as my girlfriend has just bought one and there is a rattle from the engine bay that lasts 2-3 seconds before stopping, the garage think it's some form of loose heatshield on the exhaust but I think otherwise...

Is it normal to just last a couple of seconds and then stop?

With it being the non charged version, might it be something else?

Thanks for possibly putting my mind at ease

Mark

My cooper s had the death rattle but to be honest it was a start up then it would go away. I have a JCW 2011 now and it does rattle a bit when you switch it off not much of a rattle tho. Nothing like the death rattle my cooper s was like a tractor on start up .

You can get a rattle from the clutch release mechanism when switching off as the engine vibrates to a standstill too after its worn a bit.

Thanks for the reply, again it only seems to be affecting the MCS not the MC. I would have thought they used the same block or at least the same timing chain setup?

Is it just there are a lot more MCS owners on here than MC?

Also the rattle is on cold start up, lasts a couple of seconds and then rests to a smooth tickover. The rattle seems to come to a fairly abrupt stop...

Thanks
Mark

Potentially fixed :)

Just to update this...

Garage has confirmed that the cam chain tensioner is dead and are agreeing to replace and repair for free...

This is great news but I still have a concern that there may have been permanent damage to the engine?

If the tensioner is replaced earlier enough will this normally prevent more damage?

How are the new tensioners fairing? are they failing just like the originals?

Thanks and sorry for all the questions

Look forward to getting the car and posting up some pics

Thanks,
Mark
