Maybe it would better if I gave some history and details
- it will be used to 'mainly' transport just my wife and I
- likely to be under 8k miles a year mainly local
- As we are 40+ insurance is not an issue
- ideal budget £3,000-6,000
- not mechanics, use local garage to fix things
- I have had.. wait for it 40+ cars from 4x4's to Tr4a's !
- we like a bit of speed
- we've had a lot of Tdi engines
OK now the questions..
1.6 Cooper or 1.6 Cooper
Petrol or Diesel
pre 2005 ( if thats the right year ? ) or post
We have seen a few and driven both a 1.6D, 1.6Petrol and 1.6 S. We noticed there was a lot more torque in the diesel and certainly the cooper s we tried was very hard on the old bones..
I have recently just purchased a 2009 Cooper infact I picked it up yesterday.
If your looking for a Pre-2005 Model then I would recommend posting in the 1st Generation Model Section and the 2nd Generation is 06/07 onwards.
As for engines unless your doing at least 15,000 miles per year the diesel is not worth it as you won't do the mileage to cover the extra cost as even second hand the diesel has a premium over petrol.
I chose the Cooper over the Cooper S purely down to a mechanical reasoning the Cooper not having a Supercharger or Turbo changer means theres less risk of mechanical failure, ok it's not as quick but it's quick enough and very fun at legal speeds.
Diesel is no good for mileages under 14000 mile a year, they clog up, the particulate filters, if only used for short journeys and they go into slow motion mode unless the garage strips and cleans it out which can cost a lot.
Low mileage need petrol.
Anything you save on fuel will be spent on garage bills to clean out the filter.
Thanks for that but I've already spoken to my local garage that always looks after my cars and he has a cooper d, never had a problem. Ive had over 40 cars and never had a problem with diesels as long as once in a while you give them a blast
Well yes thats it you need to give them a jolly good run so the filter goes into clean down mode, so if youre only using it around town it may never do that and thats when you have problems, if youre doing motorway miles regularly then you may get away with it and the particulate filters have only been fitted as standard since I think it was 2011 so any diesel before this doesnt have the problem but all since then will.
Something to bear in mind when youre choosing?
