I've just bought a Cooper S which has a JCW bodykit and rear spoiler. I like the bodykit, but I'm really not taken with the the JCW spoiler. I've asked for it to be replaced with a standard Cooper S rear spoiler or the Aerodynamic Rear Spoiler.
The MINI dealer is currently saying that this might be seriously expensive because removing the JCW spoiler will leave two bolt holes. I can't understand this because the Aero spolier seems to replace a section at the top of the roof.
I replaced my standard S spoiler with a JCW spoiler and it was an exact swap, same holes and everything. BUT, as the Aero spoiler has nothing in the middle to attach it to the car I suspect you will need a special aero section for the roof if it does not already come attached to the spoiler.
Edit that: just looked at the pdf and the base is attached. I suspect there are fewer mountings but the holes may not be visible so could just be sealed up.
i have the standard S spoiler on mine, but am looking for a JCW one!! what colour is your roof?
its a direct replacement, 4 bolts and its off. very easy job.
on the R53, it would have left 2 holes because the same base was used and the spoiler drilled into it. however, with the R56 it is the whole section that is replaced.
Thanks everyone - certainly puts my mind at ease. And good advice about selling the old spoiler - obvious really, but I hadn't thought of that!
I haven't inspected the JCW spoiler yet as I haven't seen my car in the flesh, but from the pictures it looks like it has silver mounts and carbon or silver fin with orange at the end (!). I've attached a photo.
I'll let you know when I get it, which should be in two weeks time.
pickard, just out of interest, which did you prefer? I've got to choose between getting the standard Cooper S spoiler or the Aero spoiler. I can't find photos of Minis fitted with the Aero spoiler, so I can't tell if it's too over the top. It looks nice in the Mini brochure, but I can't really gauge how far it sticks above the roofline.
And thanks again for your advice - it gives me a lot more confidence in dealing with their sceptical parts guy!
Hi I had the jcw spoiler on mine and decided I didn't like it either so put standard S spoiler back on, I have seen a couple of Minis with aero spoiler on and it looks really nice if it were me I'd go for the aero one Found this pic of one fitted so you could see what it looks like
I haven't thought about how much I want for the old spoiler. Let me wait to get it in my hands first to make sure it's in good condition. I asked the dealer to take it off carefully, but given the advice they've given me so far I'd better not assume they can do that properly I'll be collecting the car in two weeks time.
i swapped my spoiler myself, a week after getting the car not knowing what i was doing and it took literally 3 or 4 minutes. so i hope a dealer could do it!!
