Hi All. I know this topic has been covered time and time again. However I was hoping to get some more definitive feed back on a combination of issues around the area of mirror cap replacement on my 2007 Cooper S, its the face lifted model.
My issue is my Mini seems to have stick on union jack mirror caps. These appear to be over the original caps. One is starting to peel. Personally I don't like the union jack caps on my car I want to replace the caps in full chrome.
1 = Has anyone removed the stick on cap covers? If so any tips?
2 = I have seen a youtube clip on how to remove the original caps. They make it look so simple but from my initial investigation you must need to remove the glass and in the youtube video they don't??? Also my mirror are electric is this a more complex removal?
3 = Does anyone have experience on using the cover caps as opposed to replacing the cap itself? It would appear a lot cheaper to buy the stick on caps? Has anyone reasons for or against this?
4 = What are peoples opinions on hand painting them? I was considering perhaps buying primer and doing it myself anyone done this?
I attach pics of my mirrors can someone advise me that it is indeed stick on covers I have and my original mirrors are black?
4 = All the caps I've dealt with in the past (R50 and R56 factory black or white) have been solid plastic. Yep, these look like stickers over a black cap.
Haven't been up close and personal with the union jack ones but didn't think they'd be stickers. Good chance you'd be able to peel off and use a gentle cleaner to remove the adhesive (eucalyptus oil??)
As part of the dechroming process on our MINI, I painted the mirror caps red with Plastidip spray paint. Worked like a champ. It's inexpensive, easy to apply, durable and not permanent(if you want a change later).
