Mini Bi-Xenon / Xenon

Hi guys

recently got myself a 60 plate Cooper S.

mine has adaptive headlights (I am assuming they are xenon as they are very white compared to any other car I've had) but i was wondering if there was a difference between "xenon" and "bi-xenon" because my headlights dont have anything engraved onto them, whereas i noticed some of the cars in the showroom had "Bi-Xenon" or something engraved on there?

All R56 with Xenons are Bi-Xenons. The marketing department was late to discover the term and decided to print it on the light units of facelifted models...

A Xenon bulb is by physical definition NOT dimmable. So it will give you full power all the time (high-beam). In the old days that meant using a normal halogen bulb for the low beam.

Newer cars use only one xenon bulb in a Bi-xenon configuration: within the reflector there is an electronically controlled motorized cover that alters the beam's characteristic spread to emulate a low-beam light. When you look at the xenon from different angles and especially from below you will notice that the intensity changes. The reason is because of this mechanism (pretty much the same principle as an LCD, but with only two positions).

Bixenon - the xenon light unit incorporates a shutter which enables it to perform the main and dipped function. This is fitted to R56 R55 etc as standard or an option depending on the model.
