Sump Gasket Oil Leak

I have been told the Mini one 1.4 petrol has 2 types of sump gasket sealing method. A normal cardboard gasket or black sealer without a gasket.
The standard gasket is fairly straight forward, however the sump pan can be very difficult to remove on the sealer version, often ending in the sump having to be replaced totally due to distortion.
How can I tell what type I have?
If I ring the dealer can they tell from the vehicle details?
Can I change the sealer type to a gasket type or do I have to renew the sealer?

I would favour having a gasket over just black sealer can I make this conversion simply or could the engine be different?
