Are there any statistics on the paddle shift one. most newer cars now have quicker 0-60 with paddles than manual. but the old cvt was slower. do you have any stats on this?? ive also read somewhere there will be a double clutch system like vw group stuff is this true.

I don't think they will make a DSG gearbox, VW probably has patent on the gearbox. I suspect some sort of SMG gearbox, from BMW. I did hear it will be a six gear gearbox. I pretty sure BMW/MINI are not going to make the same mistakes again, with the gearboxes. The manuel gearbox might still be the same in basics, but I'm sure they've improved it inside.

you cant patent a gearbox. otherwise toyotas vvt for example would have been patented when they created it, but now everyone is doing it. theres only so much you can do in automotive industry so there is no patenting. dsg is vw groups paddle shift, smg is mercedes'. they are essentially the same thing but with a different name to make it their own. all the new minis will have 6 speed gearboxes. and as paul said they are getrag. correct me if im wrong but they are made to order via an external company so bmw have nothing to do with it.

SMG is BMW's paddle shift thing I believe Wooly. Mercedes don't do one. The DSG box is completely different to the BMW system, I believe the SMG is basically an Auto with paddles on the back of the steering wheel. As you said the DSG system is a two clutch gearbox and I don't think any other manufacturer outside the VAG group has made anything similar, or as good. Slightly off topic but I went out in a golf GT TDI with DSG. My god the speed that thing changes gear is aboslutely amazing. I was actually gobsmacked at how it changed gear ![]() The getrag boxes are made in France I believe, not 100% sure on that one though.

v dub paddle shifts are amazing, i want a good one on the mini .mercedes do have a paddle shift system and i thought it was smg must be something else then. me mates dad has an e-class with it, semi automatic where you can either flick up or down on the gear knob or use paddles. but that is VERRRY slow according to figures.

Hi guys,Weve ordered ours with LSD , I wouldnt even entertain it without . I hope the sales girl was correct in saying it is an option? If anyone (Paul etc) knows for sure let me know. Best Regards Roland GT Tuning

I am positive SMG is BMW's name for the flappy paddle gearbox. It changes gear really fast, the latest SMG is in the M6/M5 (7gears). I do not think there is a need for a copy of VW DSG gearbox. The SMG's are good enough. When the M3 CSL came out, I heard no complains from Top Gear driver J. Clarkson .So I hope BMW will put in a SMG box... But maybee it is cheaper to have it produced via an external company, since the havend got one lying around for front wheel driven cars.

My dad recently test drove an M6 and the SMG gearbox was awesome. The dealer said it was basically a manual gearbox with no clutch, rather than an automatic with paddles. This can be seen because the car will not sit on a hill in gear without rolling backwards whereas in an auto it would hold. It did have a nifty function of being able to sit on the hill for a couple of seconds if you hold the left paddle to give you time to transfer your foot from the brake to the accelerator.

| The SMG gearbox also interfaces tightly with the ECU. For example, when downshifting an SMG gearbox, the software will blip the throttle to match revs for the gear change. Quite a smart system, and very expensive for anything but the highest performance MINI (nudge...nudge...wink...wink!).
