R56 MCS LSD- better than the R53?

Hi Guys, as you know we have an R56 MCS which was one of the first to get the LSD (we waited 6 months from ordering just to have it). Now it hasnt been on the track but it is on track day tyres and has been driven pretty hard (handling wise, not land speed records) . All can can say is the diff is superb. By that I mean at putting down power coming out of a corner. I havnt had even a hint of wheelspin from the unloaded front wheel. (both together -yes). It feels like the diff is setup quite tight .
Yes it does mean you wrestle with the steering a bit more, but just hang on a bit tighter.
Compared to the Quaiffe diff we fitted to our R53? Ultimatley a good plate diff should be a bit quicker on a tight circuit. The Quaiffe is easier to drive ....which do I prefer?..... Im not sure yet

The R53 factory LSD felt more like an ordinary open diff, so maybe the R56 is a better track day diff....it certainly is impressive.
ps If your limp wristed and like driving one hand on the wheel dont opt for the R56 factory LSD.
Best Regards Roland GTT

It's still the Super LSD, they may have adjusted it though.

Got LSD on my July 07 MCS and very pleased with it. No wheel spin at all, but as Roland said you have to hold the steering firmly with both hands!!!!

When I tested an MCS without LSD in March this year, there was quite a lot of wheel spin.

Sorry to jump off topic, I have a MCS mainly GTT tuned thanks to Roland . When in 1st gear when ive put my foot down, obvisouly due to the power ive had quite a bit of wheel spin aswell as understeer coming out of bends and off roundabouts.

Would a LSD eliminate all this?

LSD will not eliminate wheel spin, especially accelerating hard in 1st gear !!! But but will reduce it to a certain extent.

When accelerating hard on bends/roundabouts, then do so with the front wheels as straight as possible. You are probably driving too enthusiastically.

you shouldnt go WOT stright away in first anyway, should ease it in to about 4 grand then nail it, An LSD will transfer the torque to the wheel it detects has the most grip, although if you nail it from 0, theres not gunna be much grip going on ^_^

Ye I know that, its quicker to ease the power in rather than just trying to WOT, just got to learn how to do it most efficetivley without wheelspinning.

Out of curiosity, could the LSD be installed into a normal Cooper? To benefit winter driving?

I may have misinterpreted the information but are people saying that having the R56 LSD means there is more torque steer so you have to hold onto the steering wheel tighter? I thought that LSD would reduce torque steer so it would be the opposite?

Just a quick query regarding the LSD, is this an actual part fitted to the car, ? or a electronic device, because i was told you cant get it fitted other then when the car is new?
My freind has just had one fitted on his BMW, and cost him well over £600.
The option price on this for £115 seems cheap then.?

Having LSD does not stop torque steering occurring, but it helps you to control it. This requires a strong grip on the steering.

The only way to avoid torque steering is by avoiding hard acceleration when the front wheels are at an angle. Suggest you do a Google search on "Torque Steering" there are plenty of articles giving guidance and techniques.

This problem affects all FWD cars with high torque/BHP engines, not just the MCS.

LSD became available on the R56 from April this year at a cost of approx' £100. It has to be specified when you order the car, and is fitted in the gearbox. To have it fitted after delivery would be expensive as it would involve removing the gearbox.

You would need to contact your Dealer regarding if it could be done.
