United-Kingdom Noisy engine / timing chain?

Has anyone with a second generation MINI experienced a noisy engine that starts from cold and rattles quite loudly for a minute or two? Is it getting worse? I have a Cooper S only 14000 miles. I have had this problem for a while and now have had it sorted. New timing chain and gears has done the job.

Hope this helps

Thats good to hear! Mine is the same on cold start ups, usually the first start of the day and as you say couple minutes later and its all gone.. I may consider getting this done if it gets worse, dont think it does though its just the same rattly noise for 2 mins and then it suddenly disappears, i usually dont drive the car until that noise goes, kind of like my signal that the car is warm

Keep this topic updated as ive heard of a few fixes to this and some people end up with the noise returning within 4000 miles..Hope yours is permanently fixed as it would be good to find a solution as it is a little bit off putting that noise I bet mini warm up all their test drive cars in the morning

Sorry Dave but I think you'll be back.
There's a thread a mile long on this one.
Of everyone who's had these parts fitted, I can't think of one for whom it was a sucess in the long term- lets hope you are the first

Dave,
How did you go about this? Did you go to the dealers and they replaced it under warranty?

Just bought a Mini Cooper S !!

As S8RAH already stated don't get your hopes up that it's fixed for good...

I had new parts on my car and the noise was gone for a few months but has returned a few times since though not as frequently as before. I am waiting for winter to see if that makes it worse.

I monitored the noise on a calendar for a while to see how often it was making the noise. Gradually it was almost every other day. I had taken it in before and they had changed the tensioner. The job was done under warranty and cost £1000. In the past Astles of Grimsby did not have a fix however BMW printed it off their computer. Parts fitted where different and had been modified from the original ones. Hope this helps. However, since being fixed I have another air sucking sound from the engine that I need to take in.

United-Kingdom Noisy engine / timing chain

I've had my mini a year now and it has been in to Mini twice for this problem. As usual the noisey engine never happens when it's in (it sounds like a fan catching) but they identified the problem due to the timing chain streching. It was replaced under warrenty in July08 and worked fine until the begining of the month.

Again the timing belt has streched (only by 2 or 3mm). I have been told that it is a manufacturing problem with the timing belt and the solution hasn't yet been found. They are expecing to have an updated part by mid December 08.

Hope this helps!

Nice to hear that there seems to be a solution to the problem. I put down an order for a Cooper S this weekend so I'm hoping for a rattle-free experience.

Just to say my car is still rattle free. If you are just buying one I'm sure you will enjoy.

This is great news Dave, do you know if Astles are happy to accept calls from other dealers on their fix?
The MINI fix should be out very soon but at the moment they are having to concentrate on the post July (thinks) 07 builds, if anyone has an earlier build date this may be of use to them.
My new S arrived 3 weeks ago, no rattle yet !!!!

All dealers have access to the same BMW system (named PUMA from memory..) they don't come up with their own fixes. If they can't fix problems or PUMA reports don't help BMW sends regional techs to the dealer to help out. Any fixes would then be fed back into the system.

There's been a few PUMA reports on this issue and numerous revisions of parts to try and fix it. All detailed in the massive thread in the faults section. Hopefully they are starting to get somewhere with it, however don't be surprised if it returns in 6-8 months!

Mine has been worked on in the past and has been fine for the past 6 months or so but has now started up again, though currently not that frequently.

I am in Cork Ireland and also have this problem, it goes away after half a mile or so. The dealer took quite a while to find the problem. I have been give a puma number, and told there may be a fix here in December, which is now nearly gone. I hope they get a fix soon as it is quite worrying.
Oliver.

Update on engine rattle AND GENERAL MOAN

Its back!! On Boxing Day I was getting ready to go on a un with Doncaster MC and guess what? The engine started rattling again. Since then it has done it now six times the latest was today when it rattled for about a mile and a half.

The car is booked in again to look at the problem at Astles. With this fault and domestic electrial engineers trying to get my cooker oven working properly since mid November - they have been out 6 times and it is still broken - I am well p**@@ed off.

Yesterday I wrote an email to Bmw complaining about the fault and other faults I have had with this car. I am awaiting a reply tomorrow. I have threatened to go to the media - Top Gear and 5th Gear to let others know the level of dissatisfaction there is amongst second generation MINI owners. I will do it too.

Am I a moaner ? Or has our level of expertese to actually fix something been lost? Is there such a thing as goodcustomer care?

When I get a job done well I will say thank you and very often reward them. When it goes wrong I feel I am the bad b@**xxxrd.

I will keeep you informed.

Have a nice day, Dave C

Oliver.

I must say that at first it did seem to fix it. But as others have said it does seem to come back and mine has. My worry is when it is out of warrenty. I have recently bought a couple of old Volvo estates for me and my son both high milage 152000 and 200000. One has VW diesel the other has Audi diesel. I have a1.2 Fiesta with 231000 miles and it has never had a spanner on it other than general servicing. Will the MINI ever be capable of 200000? Will people say its only done 150000 there's another 100000 in it yet? I don't think so.

I have had two previous Minis and they were great - no real problems, that's why I got a third one. Went at the weekend to the VW garage though!!

Hope your car does get fixed because they are ace looking cars.
