Well, out of curiosity I visited my main dealer for investigation of a slight shuddering on take off. It's noticeable a majority of the time, but sometimes isn't present at all, and only a small amount of judder when it happens.
I've noticed this in the last couple of weeks.
The car has done 65,000 miles, of which I have only covered 4,000 miles of these, as I have only owned it for a year.
So the verdict was, that it appears to be the clutch, and at worst case could be the Dual Mass Flywheel. In any case it's a time consuming job, as I'm told the sub-frame needs to be dropped to get access to the clutch housing.
So the quote for just a clutch replacement was £1,150.00, and if I had both the clutch and the flywheel replaced, the total comes to £1,915.00
They gave me a breakdown of every part required, of which included £150 worth of nuts, bolts, clamps, gaskets, oil and seals.
So they apparently need to replace for new, all the above too. (Can't use the old ones)
Expensive things these MINI's......... especially if this is required every 60,000 miles or so.
I don't know the history of the previous drivers, so not sure of their driving style, but I'm not one for "ragging" the car off the lights or abusing the clutch, so hope this isn't expected at these relatively low mileages during my ownership.
Is it really every 60k or so? I ask because I just got mine (07 MC S) used and it had just under 66k miles on it. Drove it nine days and the clutch burned out. I am also not an especially aggressive driver so I was rather shocked at finding this out. Luckily the used auto dealer paid for 90% of the cost. They replaced the flywheel and related parts as well.... I understand this is normal when replacing the clutch due to the time and effort to reach it and to disassemble.
Could our clutches have been faulty or just the way they were built? Is it expected the clutch will burn out after about 60k? If so, I'll have to start saving too.
