United-States 2007 Mini Super Rough Idle and stalling But Drives Fine

I have a 2007 Mini S 126000 miles

When you first start it it idles great for about 10 or 15 seconds then it starts to rough idle. It does not stall at this point I have let it Idle for 20 min and at stop lights does not stall.

Once you get it going it runs very smooth no power loss, no chug runs great even when the check engine light does comes back on it does not chug or anything just light pops on and it does not flash just a solid check engine light.

Codes from check engine light was misfire I took the code off then when it came back on it went from 2 to 3 then took it off it went to misfire in 4....so on. code jumps from each one so it has shown a misfire in all at one time or another.

New Plugs ( NKG )... oil change (Total) and replaced head gasket had a small oil leak.

I checked for any vacuum leaks and did not find any.

Now after all this it runs little worse because it now will stall at Idle and at stop lights. Any time you push in the clutch and allow the car to idle it will stall.

Once you are driving it runs smooth no problems, no rattle, no engine noise what so ever, and no check engine light after 3 days of driving.

With no check engine light I have no code to check. I will have to wait for it to come back on if it does.

Any help or suggestions

Thanks in advance for the help

I have a Mini Cooper 07 56000 miles..

I have been having the same issues, I was also having irregular revving and car cutting out when I didn't know, so just turning off rather than a stall. I was getting these codes -
P0012 – A Camshaft Position Timing Over – Retarded Bank 1
287D – Camshaft timing (bank 1) intake faulty
2891 – Synchronisation of inlet camshaft (bank 1) with crankshaft offset error
2845 – Camshaft control solenoid valve faulty
2870 – Intake camshaft adaption faulty

I got my timing chain replaced (700) which has helped the cutting out and irregular revving but I am still getting the rough idle. It does not stall but every time I go am stooped, the idle drops to around 500rpm and then back up to 800rpm..
I have not tried to solve this but have heard that it may potentially be the fuel pump.
If you find the solution please let me know.

hey Darklin, are there any other faults stored? nothing thermostat or coolant temp sensor related? the R56 can do weird things when there is a fault there.

Claire, all the faults stored point towards a bad inlet vanos solenoid valve, infact that fault code 2845 says exactly that.
Check it's plugged in, I could maybe take a picture of one tomorrow to show you where it is if you like? it's at the back of the engine, drivers side top a silver cylinder looking valve with a black plug.
I suspect you need a new one, fairly common for them to jam up internally and need replacing. it's messing with the valve timing.
otherwise it's possible the timing isn't correct from when the chain was replaced, hopefully not
