United-Kingdom Mini Cooper '05 Auto Gearbox Failure Conondrum

Hello Forum,

I have a Mini Cooper 2005 Automatic; the gearbox starting being funny;

Initially the revs were going too high while changing from 1st to 2nd gear.

I disconnected the battery hoping it was an ECu issue. It worked for a while (rev were now too low when changing).

I noted that when changing from Park to Drive the gearbox had a small lag of about half second to engage with a little bump.

Later on.. total disaster... the gear would not change from above 1 at all..

A diagnostic unveiled the following messages codes:

1787 gearbox ratio actuator open circuit.
698 gearbox control unit
EGS no communication
ABS no communication

Those this points to the transmission slipping inside and requiring the sheave and chain replacing ?

I am not familiar with error codes, but it does not look like there is a clear indication of mechanical part broken inside the gearbox.

On one hand :
-I am worried I will have to pay for an expensive gearbox dismount when in reality it's an electrical issue only.

On the other hand I am worried that the mechanical repair does not solve the issue and I get dragged in endless repairs involving Ecus.

Although in good conditions (1 previous owner only, all paper work perfect etc.) my mini is 115 k miles, so thinking whether I should repair it all and find alternative solutions.

Thank you very much anyone could help and advise whether the logs do actually points at mechanical failure / advise what to do next
