United-Kingdom My New JCW

Hi
Been a member for a while but never posted. I'd like your thoughts on my new JCW. Just completed dechroming the exterior and chroming the interior. Would the wheels look better gloss black ? What else do you think I should do to make it different yet goodClick image for larger version

Welcome to the forum - very nice! Few too many stickers for my liking personally, but very nice all the same.

I'd definitely go gloss black on the wheels, along with a black scoop and black rear diffuser.

Hi Minicore
Thanks for your comments, I think you're right. I've taken off the stripes on the back, looks better don't you think ? I like the " John Cooper " sticker so reluctant to take that off. Will definetly go for the black wheels though. Thanks again.Click image for larger version

The John cooper stickers on the front spilter look ridiculous in my opinion

Same with the ones on the side

Take them off

I would take the front stripes off and replace the bonnet scoop with a carbon fibre one and get a carbon fibre boot handle or rear diffuser

Looking good! Still not sure about those JCW signatures though.

In light of the CF boot handle, I'd be inclined to wrap the rear diffuser and mirror caps in CF... then all it needs are those gloss black wheels and you're well sorted!

Obviously painting or power coating your original wheels would be cheapest, but it depends on your budget. One thing I would say is that the R112 (the wheels you have, as do all second gen JCW spec cars, and newer ones with the equivalent of the old Sport Pack) are really common now, both in silver and black.

The absolute best looking MINI wheels, in my opinion, are the original JCW alloys - see here.

I think you can still get them from a dealer, but only in silver, and at a considerable cost. The best route would be to find a second hand set, on eBay perhaps, and in need of refurbishing (thus cheap), then get them done in black. Only seen these wheels in black once before and they look amazing! That was years ago too, when it was still a fairly "new" wheel, and before EVERYONE was doing their wheels black... the guy was seriously ballsy at the time as they were brand new out of the box and nobody was entirely sure how they'd look!

First choice from current, readily available wheels would be the R105 JCW alloy in black (like this, this or this). You can see all of the OEM MINI wheels, along with common names, colour options and "R" numbers in the FAQ here.

Another option (probably my second favourite MINI wheel ever) is the Alpina offering. I've only ever seen a handful of cars with these wheels on! If you're unfamiliar, check out the very bottom of this page. Possibly a bit too fussy for some people, and almost definitely wouldn't work in black (in my opinion anyway).

I take it that you only recommend OEM Mini wheels. What about others, Wolfrace etc. Any good ? Why are they so much cheaper than the Mini wheels ?

Yeah, those are all OEM (with the possible exception of the Aplina ones, but they're close enough to OEM for me). I'm not keen on aftermarket wheels in general, especially the cheaper ones... they tend to be cheap for a reason!

That said, there are a few exceptions! I like a lot of what Oz are doing - the Ultraleggera for example is pretty timeless and looks good on the MINI. Fairly keen on some of Konig's wheels too... Flatout, Feather, Daylite etc.

And finally, Dare - just the NK and ST though I think? Good example of the ST wheels on a MINI here.

Thanks a lot mate. Got a lot to think about now. You appear to be very well versed in all things Mini, will seek your advice again, if that's OK. Much appreciated
