Rallye in the Valley 2006 Penticton

All right, the official event thread!

The plan is for MINI's from Western Canada to meet up and join in at the Rallye in the Valley event, held in Penticton June 30-July 2 2006. This event itself is actually organized by the Okanagan British Car Club, who will even include us as a class in their Show N Shine.

Event Schedule:

Friday:
MINIs will travel to Penticton in self determined groups, and meet up at a "to be determined" location for a drive into Penticton.
Saturday AM:
Show N Shine with the OBCC
Saturday PM:
A cruise around the area
Saturday Eve:
Dinner event (to be determined)
The event hotel is the Days Inn Penticton, who is giving a special rate. Registration for the Show N Shine is handled by the OBCC, through this form. We will need to determine if we wish to attend the OBCC banquet or our own, since there are two different fee structures on the form. I vote for organizing our own Saturday evening meal.

I am also working on getting the above rallye "decal" done up as removable decals for our MINIs, so that the cars can wear the decal on their way to and from Penticton.

I will continue to edit this post as details are determind.

Edit: Entry form is now on-line.

So who all is coming? Let's show Penticton what a mass of MINIs looks like! The attendee list thus far:

- faster, Tobias!
- Beken
- Velveteen_mini
- Mom's Mini
- The Boss
- Krishelle999
- Blkdinan
- Masada

Maybe's:

- British SD (if someone feeds the cat )
- AirGuitarChampion (if the MINI shows up in time)
- Ganoush
- Xtremepsionic

Unhappy we're very sad...

As much as we'd prefer to be in the sunny Okanagan for the Rally in the Valley, unfortunately we have to travel to Saskatchewan for a family reunion that same weekend. Have fun everyone!

This sounds intresting. I couldn't possibly know I could go until a few weeks before the event. I'm going to jot this down on my calander and see what I can do.

I have friends in Penticton so this could be very fun.

I'm filling my form out tonight.
Looking forward to meeting all the Mini owners from BC and Alberta.
It will be nice to have a showing of the 'new' Minis in Penticton.

Have asked RITV about a place to meet. No suggestions other than the hotel like everyone else. Perhaps we can meet near Okanagan Falls. I'll see what I can find out.

Have also asked about restaurants in the area. Will have to try to find out some info on our own on that too.

Also, no plans for the winery tours or drives yet. I guess we could go with the official group after the show.

Have asked about Tin Whistle Brewery and, yes, they have finally bottled some beer. Should be some left when we get there. If there is interest, I could see about a brewery tour on Friday when we arrive.

So, I'm seeing 3 cars from the Vancouver area and 4 from Alberta (Calgary area?) I have an email in to the Penticton Chamber to see if they can make recommendations as to where we might meet up and also where to go for dinner.

I will also check the BCAA book for parks etc for a meeting place. Would the Alberta group prefer to meet in Naramata 20 minutes north of Penticton or OK Falls, 20 minutes south? Or, meet in Penticton, although I personally think it would be more fun to show up in Penticton as a group. Although we could meet on the outskirts and drive in from there.

I would suggest the post show drive with the show group. We have done it before and it was really nice. They certainly know their area roads. That's also how we discovered the Wild Goose Winery. Got to save room in the car for a case of their Blush wine.

Any suggestions, requests (be nice) or ideas?

Count me in... well that is if I can ge the weekend off. Craig and Tobias already beat me to the punch by booking that weekend off - so I may not be so lucky. If the powers that be give me that weekend off - count me in.
I propose everyone contact the GM and Sales Manager at the dealership and demand I too get the weekend off so that I may join everybody at the event - after all this IS work related! With your support and peer pressure - maybe they'll see the light.
GO MINI GO!!!

Seriously, if that could really influence their decision I'll call! Just don't want this to backfire on ya!

Anyway, on the registration from, what entry are we? "Car and Driver"? "Car show only"?

I entered Car and Driver, as I interpreted it to mean Car Show as admission to that alone.

P.S Sean, good luck!

Car show does mean the show at the waterfront only. Car and driver is the show, Friday night "dinner" and Saturday banquet for 1.

Due to allergies, we are registered as Show only.

Keep in mind, there are only 225 spots in the show. I know it sounds like a lot, but, in past years, it has been full. The soon er you register, the better. Butter up the boss, it's a show worth going to..

I haven't sent in my form yet, as I am not sure I can get away for the whole show. But I will be there.

I live in OK Falls, and as a starting point, it's better than Naramata (but I am biased) - great ride up the east shore of Skaha (now called "Corkscrew Dr." by the tourism folks), and easy to get to down the west side on 97 and from 3a. And you might want to check out the Cannery Brewery - best piggies for parties! Excellent beer. There are some great back roads to the wineries. Also the radio observatory, and other places.

And a number of the wineries have wonderful picnic sites. A few have restaurants too. Burrowing Owl is way over-priced, but Hawthorne Mountain has the best view ion the valley, and a nice Bistro balcony with great low priced lunches, and cold wine from the winery. And they are very dog friendly. Tinhorm has a nice picnic area in a demonstration vinyard and cold wine, of course. Tinhorne and Hawthorne also have cheese and stuff. There are lots more. You could spend days doing wineries. Up Naramata or south to Oliver. They are all great. 5 within 5 minutes of me.

Depending on the number of people I could recommend some restaurants, depending on price, type of food and if you want to drive. Shaughnessy's Cove in Summerland has a pub and restaurant and is on the water. Salty's is THE beachfront restaurant in Penticton - party hearty there! Don't know if they do reservations.

Hope this helps!

Wow! You are much better than the Chamber of Commerce. As I don't know which road the Alberta group is coming in on, I can't make any recommendations as to whether we meet north or south of Penticton. Sorry if it seems obvious to others, but I don't travel that route.Chamber said either The Pyramids or Kickaninni(?) were good places to meet. They also suggested Denny's or Ramada Inn pub for food. I don't know how many or what day we need to meet for food. Could even meet as a group for lunch on event day. History tells me that all the beachfront restaurants are FULL on event day.

I don't have a clue where the Pyramids or Kickaninni are, except for the Summerhill Pyramid Winery in the se Kelowna area. Most Vancouverites would travel 3, 3a to get to Penticton. (Joining 97 about 8K south of Penticton) MUCH nicer drive than the Coq. But if you take the Coq you come out just south of Kelowna on 97. Calgarians come south through Kelowna on 97.
