MINI Car Meet!

I got a flyer on my windshield today for a meet coming up at the Motion Picture and Television Retirement Community center!
Saturday March 15th @10:00 AM
23388 Mulholland Dr. Woodland Hills.

It says:
Come and share your car with the seniors and meet other MINI owners.
All Minis are welcome
* There will be refreshments*
For more information call :
Gene Novak (323) 660-4715

I would expect the newly formed SCMM to have a pretty good showing!
BCNU - G
P.S. The picture on the flyer shows a row of original Minis driving in a line - we need to get some new MINIs out there to represent ourselves!

I also just found out that the SoCal Mini Maniacs are also having a drive up to Solvang on the same day! That's 3 Mini/BMW events on March 15 :-(

I would love to participate in one of SCMM's drives but I had already planned to attend the Mini Meet in Woodland Hills, and my afternoon that day is already booked with other stuff.

Please give us more notice as I plan my weekends at least a month in advance...don't want to miss any more runs!

Thanks!

3 events, 1 me

I agree! I don't think the TechFest West is a big conflict, since it does run for a few days and the crossover audience wouldn't be too big. However, it sucks to bifurcate the MINI community with two specific events on the same day! I wish one of these could be on Sunday so I could participate in both. I appreciate the work done by the Motion Picture Home and want to attend that to show support for a charitable cause, but hate missing (yet another) SCMM ride! Especially so early in the club's formation when it needs the support and growth.

Exclamation So Cal MINI Maniacs event conflict

Gosh, is eveyone in the entertainment biz? My wife is working on the visual effects for the Matrix sequels, so she's up in Northern California-- but she is flying down tonight to drive with the SCMM group tomorrow (which at last count had three dozen MINIs pre-registered for the drive; should be a good one with 70 people or so).

We got the flyer for the meet at the Motion Picture & TV retirement center... but I wonder how many people were even aware of it. We got it because a guy pulled up alongside of us waving a piece of paper (hey I grew up in L.A., it took me awhile to even decide to roll down the window) and then he gave us the MPTV flyer-- it's pretty hard to miss our pretty loud, pretty modified MCS (and at that time we still had all our sponsor stickers on the car from a recent photo shoot). Anyway, maybe the MPTV event was promoted on all the message boards and such- if so, it seems that SCMM should have picked up on that. But I know from past experience planning events for other car clubs that it's hard to get everything straight, things do overlap.

Regarding the BMW CCA Tech Fest, I do see it as a pretty huge conflict (actually Tech Fest was the reason my wife is flying down here; we were BMW enthusiasts first... it just so happened that there was an SCMM drive and we're going to do a little of both). Not counting the track day on Thursday at California Speedway, Tech Fest is Friday (during the day) and Saturday (during the day) and NOTHING on Sunday (bummer, as we were hoping to go to Tech Fest on Sunday). That means that unless one has Friday off from work, it's either Tech Fest OR the SCMM drive OR the MPTV meet-- in our case we are going to do part of SCMM until mid-day and then part of Tech Fest in the afternoon.

Anyway, whatever we all do this weekend...

Happy Motoring!

Well, I went to TechFest West and had a great time! Several tricked ouyt MINIs and a lot of great discussions that covered ALL BMWs. I'm sorry to have missed the Motion Picture home event and the SCMM run, but will have to shoot for next time!

How were they???

I too didn't attend either event because of the heavy rains. I am assuming they canceled or postponed the Motion Picture home event? If anyone gets updated news on this please post :-)

Talking Saturday's SCMM event was great

Saturday's SoCal MINI Maniacs event was terrific. In spite of the constant rain in the morning, we had quite a few MINIs (three people did counts of the MINIs and came back with three answers: 38, 39, or 40 MINIs... in other words, about 40 MINIs).

Eurotuner magazine brought their custom Laguna Seca Blue painted (exterior AND interior) Cooper S, and also brought free copies of the April 2003 issue of Eurotuner. Their modded MCS and our modded MCS ( http://home.earthlink.net/~bmwmini ) share the cover of the April issue and inside is a feature article on both MINIs as well as a Buyers Guide for MINI aftermarket parts. Eurotuner also sent their Tech Editor and he was taking pictures galore during the drive (even in the rain), so I wouldn't be surprised to see this particular SCMM event in a future issue of Eurotuner.

The first stop on the drive was in Santa Barbara (Goleta) at Moss MINI where we got a tour of their facility <much larger than I pictured> and then we all got 10% off all aftermarket parts... which prompted pretty much a feeding frenzy amongst the MINI enthusiasts present. From that point my wife and I had to depart from the SCMM group to go back down to L.A. for the BMCCCA Tech Fest West...

Since my wife & I are pretty involved in both the BMW club and the Z3 club, it was nice to see vendors from around the country-- some we hadn't seen in years and some who we had never met (even though they were sponsors on our MINI!). But when I asked the President of one of the largest performance products vendors for his impression of Tech Fest compared to Gateway Tech (the predecessor event for 21 years) he said "It's awful". Anyway, we enjoyed it... but I think we would have been disappointed if we had travelled a great distance and/or we didn't already know several of the people there that we could enjoy chatting with.

In sum, we only heard of one MINI that people knew of who stayed home for rain reasons (and I thought "garage queens" were more from the BMW and Porsche clubs... not us Motor On Regardless types) and the approximately 80 people at the SCMM 'Solvang Slalom' seemed to be having a great time in the liquid sunshine!
