DIY Strut Top Torque Setting?

Have fitted new strut tops to a 2002 cooper and need to know what the torque setting is for the strut top nut... dont want to over tighten it and at the same time dont want it to loose!

Hi there, just looked it up in the haynes manual and it says the strut top mounting nut torque is 34 Nm or 25 lbf/ ft , but it also says not to reuse the old mounting nuts. Hope that helps you out.

Sorry I misread your thread. The single nut in the middle of the strut top is torqued to 64 Nm or 47 lbf/ft. But it still says not to reuse that nut too.

Was this in the haynes manual about the torque settings?

I take it this is the nut at the end of the bolt which actually holds the bar into the mounting bracket as I was going to take it off to get at the air filter and I had heard not to re-use the mounting bracket nuts so this then applies to this solitary nut as well. I take it these are easily available from the stealers?? Anyone have any idea on price of a replacement nut?? couple of quid??

Ps, thanks for that torque setting, was trying to find out myself

This torque setting is for the single nut that holds the strut top to the damper rod, and yes this is also from the haynes manual.

I replaced my strut top mountings and put the old nut back on, yeah i meen the big 18mm one in the middle that holds the suspension to the car!

Also the sturts are making a bit of noise when turning full lock left and right, somebody told me it will be the rubbers breaking in as there new... is that right or have i over tightened them??

Cheers for info

Suppose it depends on what noise they`re making. A creecking noise could well be the rubber top mounts, a clicking noise could well be the bearings. Might be agood idea to back the nut off a little and to torque it back down.

also I'd stick plenty of copper grease on the rubber surfaces that contact metal to reduce any friction/creaking.

Anyone know if a regular nut will do as replacement or is there a specific kind for this top section. I know the mounting nuts are bought in packs of 6 but are these the same size?? Don't want to have to buy 6 nuts just to replace 1. Where do you get these from as well, are they only from the stealers??

Minimania have 6 for £32?? Only want one, any ideas??

I think they only claim to use once as they come with thread lock applied.

I reused mine, but look out for the JCW strut brace nuts as the do tend to crack!

Thanks Dave, I heard they were prone to cracking but they just look like bog standard nuts so might get a direct replacement instead of paying over the odds for one. Did you get yours back on without any probs??
Your nuts that is!!
