Just looking at my works schedule, it looks like we've planned to change all our IT systems on the Monday after, which may mean working all the run weekend I'll have to see what I can do.
Allow me to give you the benefit of my vast experience with MINI runs (comprising solelyof the Yorkshire Dales 2007 Run ):
ONEs: go right to the front.
Coopers: can go in the middle.
MCSs: would cope well near the back.
GPs or modded MCSs: should go right to the back.
As, when the front cars set off, this creates a sort of sling-shot effect moving down the line with each car getting left a little further behind before they can get on the throttle. Thus, in order to keep up at the back, you need to either be in a very fast car or be a very good driver - neither of which are categories I fall into.
So if you're anything like me, try to grab a spot as close as possible to the run leader.
Hello! Yes I am the other run newbie! Although I am really looking forward to it now! Will be good to meet all the virtuals that I have been chatting to for the last few months! Hope you can make it too!
Ah yes... my mind had created a new sub-department in my memory to hide that particular incident from my waking thoughts...
Just to explain that one... I was second from last (Brummie was right behind me) on Section 1 of Day 1 of my first ever MINI Run. At the time, I was running a completely standard ONE - which had some pretty severe suspension problems at the time (things develop slowly, and you don't notice - you know how it is ). All my shocks were bad, and my front ball-joints were worn beyond belief - resulting in very poor grip on the road, combined with quite a bit of play and imprecision in the steering.
Anyhoo - given the modest performance of the ONE engine and that people ahead were starting to pull away, I decided the best thing for me to do was to be a bit brave in the corners to try to catch up. A few of the corners had a few flecks of gravel on them, and the cars in front were cleaning away two gaps in some of the gravel lines for my tires to have some nice grippy road. On one particular corner, I managed to cut the corner a touch too much, rolling my inside tyres over the gravel. This had the effect of sending me into a slide, over onto the gravel near the outside of the corner.
I steered into the slide, desperately trying to catch it, and watched wide-eyed as a large prickly green bush got ever closer. Right at the last possible second, when I was just about to run out of road, the gravel ended, the tyres got grip and I made it through the corner - WHEW!
Afterwards, Brummie finds me and goes: "You had a bit of a 'moment' there, didn't you? "
Yep, just a bit mate.
I quickly realised it'd be better to be near the front for me. For this next run, I've got far fewer suspension problems - so I'm hopeful for staying a bit further away from the bushes.
Ah, memories - and now I'm feeling the Yorkshire Fever gripping me, calling me back home to the North East... mmmmm... there was BBQ and cake last time........
I don't think Cedar Court Hotel is on a deal as such - but the best rate I found was via the Best Western website:
Have a play around with the online booking form until you get a cheap-ish rate. I will warn you though, as a nice hotel it'll be expensive - well, expensive by my standards anyway.
Yes, it's a 4*.
Hmmm... Spa, eh? Should we all bring our bikinis? I mean - swimming trunks... swimming trunks, I say!!
I have actually been on a Mini run before, just not a Mini2 run. It wasn't a biggie, think there were just 7 of us, and I was hampered to some degree by joining on route, so I tagged onto the back. Unfortunately this meant I didn't have the run notes - and the route took us down the motorway (which was easy) and then through the centre of Chesterfield (which wasn't easy) all without the aid of a navigator/passenger/mini-lookout.
