Disappointed at the Cat & Fiddle...

As menitoned on Martyn's post, due to work and other commitments I could only do the lunch stop today.

My husband and I arrived at about 12 noon, the same time as most of you and parked alongside the other MINIs (in front of "Apple")

I was expecting at least one of the MINI2 organising group to be by the bar doing introductions, I would suggest we were not the only ones who did not know everyone else...

I spent 1 1/2 hours smiling at everyone walking past, managed a few cursory glances in our direction but certainly not an opener to a "hello".

You all rushed in, placed your orders and sat in your little groups, leaving my husband and I and possibly others sat in the bar area feeling not at all welcome. It's very hard to go up to a "closed" group huddled round a table and introduce yourself!

If you want to grow the club as you seem to, may I suggest that you are as approachable to as may people as possible and not just to the folks you know.

This is the first time I'd come along to a MIN meet and unless things are a little more friendly, to those of us not in the "inner circle" I suggest will be my last.

Something not necessarily to reply to, but those of you who looked at the red and white cooper AK51 GEM or walked past the girl in the blue Pooh fleece, and ignored my glances and smiles in your direction, that was me...

Mini's have feelings too!

Sorry to hear this Mickey Gem If I'd have noticed you (or your car) I would have made myself known and you would have been most welcome as part of our 'little group'.
It was a bit strange at the Cat & Fiddle where little groups did develop, but that is the nature of both restaurants/pubs where tables are seperated. And human nature where you do get to feel more comfortable with certain people. Again, I apologise if I was one of the people who ignored you I can't beleive we didn't notice an extra MINI / MINI2ER
P.S. As I'm sure you can imagine, lots of people were glancing and smiling at us as we turned up in the MINI convoy, so one more person could easily have been missed. Not in any way an excuse, but maybe a partial explanation?

Sorry. It would have been nice to meet you.

Sorry to hear about your negative experience.
It's always difficult at these things to work out who's a MINI owner and who isn't.

Perhaps next time, wear a MINI baseball cap or something to identify yourself as one of the MINI dudes.
Sadly, I completely bailed on the run, so I missed out on seeing anyone (!!) and that white MINI - Anyone got a picci yet?
I'm surprised BMW didn't go for a metallic/pearlescent white.

I am also sorry that you found our little gathering less than friendly.

But I would like to point out that until I approached the members that I now know, I too was a stranger. Try it next time we won't bite.

Hmmmm, name badges may be naff, but they do serve a very useful purpose!

Sorry I did not introduce myself, had I known you were there at the time, I am certain I would have come and said hello

Thanks for your comments guys...

Like I've suggested food for thought for other meets...how to make sure everyone is welcome...

Martyn, you're obvously as uncomfortable approaching stangers as I am..

As for wearing something with a logo (other than Pooh Bear, he's my hero) there's not a chance!

Glad to have read you all had a good time though...

Mickey,

I did not know that you would be meeting us at the Cat & Fiddle. There were a fair number of no-shows on the day probably due to the dismal weather and the early start/hangovers from the previous night! To be honest, we didn't know who would show.

I know the majority of the MINI2ers on the Peak Run and I seriously believe that if you introduced yourself to any one them, then they would welcome, introduce and take time to chat to you. As

The little groups/ordering drinks was probably due to the order of the day. Most of us had a very early start (5.30am onwards) and were probably famished. The lunch stop was also the first proper stop of the day (after a morning of hard driving in pouring rain) for most of us to chat, catch up on news/gossip etc and it would be natural for people to be eager to talk to others. The bar at leaving time was also pretty full.

I probably would not have noticed your MINI because of the 25ish MINIs already there. One MINI tends to merge into another (excpt DK's).

I am really very sorry that you were disappointed and do hope that you will be able to make it to another meet, and hopefully we will be able to prove you wrong! The NW Region seems to hold a lot of minimeets and maybe you could pop along and meet some of the freaks that make MINI ownership a pleasure!

Mickey Gem,

Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the lunch stop.

All I can say is this apparent snub was certainly not intended.

At the start of the day (7.00am in Northampton) I knew no one, I didn't bring my wife along for company so really it was a case of introducing myself to anyone and everyone.

I hope you weren't the couple sitting behind the table I was on (did your husband have a red jacket one? You have dark hair?). If so I did see you but I wasn't sure if you MINI owners or not.

Point taken about some kind of identifier.

Next meet I will wear a pre notified / described t shirt or something so you can come and chat to at least to me!

Hopefully see you next time

Sorry to hear about your misfortune! I myself was with CMT and SoNyA as CMT's Naviagtor and entertainer of CMT's btter half little SoNyA. I have to say I do see your point, and Agree it is uncomfortable to approach people, but I have to say that I never made friends by Staring and smiling at people.

If someone made the effort to say Hello to myself at a Mini meet, I would be more than welcome to introduce them to everyone who I knew. I only knew a few people myself, the rest introduced themsleves, Or I introduced myself to.

I takes a little effort on both sides. If you arrived at the same time as us, then why not say hello in the car park, thir were a fe of us silly enough to be standing in the cold out there before going in.

I do hope your not detered from the next mini meet. If you happen to attend a Mini meet you know I'm attending click on the picture below to see what i look like and introduce yourself. I'll be more than welcome to help out!

It must be said that some people look better in photos than in real life - unfortunately, that is the case with Damo!!!

Guys,

Rather than try to justify what you all did or didn't do, accept what happened and move on...

If I'd felt that I could have approach any of you I would have done... whether that was in the car park, or in the bar, truth is you were all in your own groups and not mixing with others, with individuals or other groups, now I come to think about it...

(I hate to say it lads, not like the Mini meets I've attended in the past with either of my classic mini's)

Let's use this experience in a positive way and plan so that no other member comes away from a future meet as I have done on this occassion.

And there was me thinking I looked awful in that photo, seems like I look worse in real life Oh well!

I do need a hair cut and it was an early morning, and I didn't have a pig pie in front of me, so maybe that explains it

This thread started out as something to be aware of and something those of you that are involved in the organising group of MINI2 could improve on...

My reference to classic Mini meets possibly need some explaination but the ones I went to the organiser had a clipboard/ badge or whatever and welcomed all people into wherever the meet was.

It used to go something like this:

Mini organiser "Nice to meet you I'm... are you with the Mini club? "

Reply, "No"

Mini organiser "Sorry to have troubled you"

Reply "Yes"

Mini organiser "Great, so you know others here, No? This is Jo Smith he'll introduce you around..."

Etc etc

This is the sort of thing I was expecting... If I'd known I was effectively going to have to "gatecrash", I definately wouldn't have come along...

As I said earlier to day, accept what happened and move on.. I won't come to anything if I'm expected to "gatecrash", the MINI2 organising group can think about how to make things better next time...

So Martyn should hassle everyone in the Pub to find out if they drive a MINI ??

What do you mean should? He does it all the time anyway

I was on the Peaks run too and Im sorry to hear of your feelings about lunch. I'd just like to say I didn't know anyone (other than Martyn) before I got their either but had a great time nonetheless. For lunch I ended up plonking myself on Paul's table and had a hoot.

You cant be annoyed at not being introduced, no-one knew everyone and for a lot of us it was one of the first times to meet other people from the same group, next time all I can say it come up and talk to us, we're not scary (well, most of us anyway! )

I hope this doesnt discourage you from going to another meeting.

Red/white Cooper with Chilli, AC, ASC+T, Computer, Kenwood MP3, Alarm, 17" wheels, BLOODY BIG SMILE.

It may say Lincoln but oi be Oirish.
