Confused about wiring

Hello Everybody

Recently I was lucky enough to find a 1976 Mini Clubman really cheaply. It was pretty much a 'jigsaw puzzle', but that just added to the fun. A few months later, it is nearly ready to go back on the road, but there are a couple of things I need help with.
Firstly a problem with the lights. There are no park-lights only. With the switch on to the first (middle) position, there are park-lights and headlights, same with the switch on fully. Is this a problem with the (expensive) switch? I have stared at the schematic diagram for hours, and don't understand the problem.
Secondly, the car missing a windscreen washer bottle/motor. I have now installed one but cannot figure out how to wire the thing. I have traced the light green/black wire from the switch, but have no idea where the black wire has ended up. Can I add a wire from the washer motor to the switch, combine it with the existing black wire or would that be madness? Just to add to the confusion, a previous owner painted the engine bay and didn't cover the wiring!
All opinions on my current problems would be gratefully received.
Thanks.

This forum in mainly for New BMW MINI's so you would get a better response on a classic Mini forum like TMF linked below:
The Mini Forum (Powered by Invision Power Board)

I also have a classic Mini and have found the lucas lighting rocker switches can cause this lighting problem when worn inside.....so it sounds like you need a new switch.
I think the black wires on classic Mini's are for earth/ground circuit normally so you should be able to run a new wire with no problem but check as non-UK Mini's may be different spec! Incorrect wiring can cause shorts and fires!
(On New MINI's the earth/ground circuit is however brown!)
