Future 2005 Cooper S Owner?

Hi there,

I'm looking at purchasing a 2005 Mini Cooper S (as the title suggests). I've driven the car, rather annoyingly think it's fantastic. Everything is good to go ahead, just needs my decision. So I find myself here, read about someone getting a remap done after a simple air filter & exhaust. Impressive results! The car I'm interested in has full BMW service history & only 75000km. Wealthy owner. So I'm feeling confident! I do have a few concerns though.

How do you move the mirrors? It looked like the switch was infront of the handbrake but nothing happened.

The brakes are warped, I've got priced a full set of rotors for around $200 CAD (taxes in). How much would it be for something a bit more inspiring? Green stuff for example.

Where would the CD changer be located if there? I don't believe it has one, or an aux input. Having read your forums though it appears it won't be too hard or expensive to get my iPhone playing the tunes again. I don't think this has the updated audio although I was impressed.

One of my biggest queries about this car is the grill. It's the shiny one, not black. Is this normal? Plus with my research it's unclear if the speedometer should be by the wheel or in the centre?

I both thank you & apologize for all the questions. Never spent this much on a car before. Previous rides include a 1999 Volvo V70R (laser blue), 2002 Volkswagen Lupo, 2000 Volkswagen Polo, 1992 Volkswagen Polo. As you can see I like to upgrade each time, albeit there's been a few beaters not mentioned on the way. You guys are much more knowledgable & experienced when it comes to these cars. I recognize that & hope you could pass on your professional opinion.

Kind regards,

Daniel

Here's a snapshot from the 2005 Owners Manual regarding outside mirror adjustment ...

The best "bang for the buck" performance mod for a 1st Gen MCS is fitting a reduction supercharger pulley (15% being the most common choice).

Thank you Caveman. That's the switch I'd seen, just couldn't get them to move. I'll try again when I'm there & thank you for your assistance so far.

With the pulley, would a remap not be required too? I might be misunderstanding but the change would force more air into the system therefore making it run leaner. I do wonder as well how the Cooper S handles the combination of an induction kit, exhaust, manifold & pulley. I know that they put more equipment in to keep things cool but with the extra performance can the rest of the car take it? What's the weakness?

A remap isn't required for a 15% reduction pulley (the ECU will adapt) but will squeeze out a little more horsepower. An induction kit and exhaust are more about "sound" than performance.

I figured they'd help the breathing. More air, you can add more fuel = more bang. What sort of increase in power & torque would you expect from the pulley?

The biggest concern right now then is the grill & gauge location. It's got the pipes, logos, side details. Just confused as to why it's not a black grill. Speedometer is above the wheel, correct?

Standard grill on the MCS has body color slats with chrome surround. The black grill is part of the Aero Kit.

Standard gauge set up is center pod speedo and steering column tach. The speedo gets moved to the steering column in cars with the Navigation System or Chrono Gauges Package.

2005 Cooper S would have come with a body color matched slatted grille with chrome surround but many owners swapped them for the chrome Cooper grille or got the dealer to do it. The black aero style grilles were an optional extra with bumper I think.

Speedo was always in the centre unless optional Chrono centre dials or sat nav screen were ordered when speedo moved next to rev counter on steering column.

Ok, so it sounds like it has the chrono pack & grill then? I'll post a link to the advert:

Try putting www in front. Wouldn't work for the automatic hyperlink.

Clean looking car ...

Link worked for me without "www" ...

2005 Mini Cooper S Sporty RED Go FAST Red Only $10995 AMAZING - Halifax Cars For Sale - Kijiji Halifax Canada.

Car has Xenon headlights and Chrome Line Exterior (grill, mirror caps and boot handle). Body color roof on a MCS is less common.

Looking through the back window I see the Chrono Gauge Pack in the center pod, hence the speedo and tach on the steering column.

The wheels are OEM 16x6.5 R103 (5-spoke Blaster) ... ones you don't see too often. Not sure I'd classify a tire branded as "Touring" a high-performance tire. No room for a spare in a MCS so if the tires aren't run-flats you'll have to carry a mobility kit (compressor and sealant) to deal with punctures.

Can't tell if the seats are leather or leatherette.

I don't think the cruise control bit is accurate in the advert. The button for it is located on the steering wheel, this car doesn't have them?

I'll have to look at the cruise control, I definitely saw a button in there with cruise written on it. Thanks guys. How can I tell if it's leather or leatherette in person? Going to try & test the mirrors again but if the switch is gone roughly how much does it cost for a new one?

I'm feeling better that this is a more genuine car now. With it having a few different options I was a bit confused.

Besides cruise control buttons, multi-function steering wheel will also have audio control buttons ...

You should be able to feel the difference between leather and leatherette (vinyl) upholstery.

Give the VIN a dealer should be able to tell you what equipment came on the car from the factory.
