New member (girl!) has convertible roof problem

Hi I just bought a "new" mini 2005 convertible S 2 weeks ago, black with tan/black interior, 6 speed, supercharged, zip zip zip. Looks like I am a rare girl driver! Love it, UNTIL today, when the roof got stuck at sunroof position and won't go down. Yes, I checked the parcel shelf levers repeatedly, turned it on and off several times, let it cool down, etc. Just won't go. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Can't afford to take it to dealer.....beautiful day for top down. Please help! Thanks!

I guess check the fuses first.
Otherwise you will need to get someone to read the codes (via the ODB port) to find out where the fault is.

There are a number of microswitches which detect window / roof position and sometimes they fail, otherwise it could be something to do with the more expensive bits.

From what I've read on the forums you don't want the dealer to fix it anyway as they only want to replace the whole mechanism, Mini specialists or roof specialists should be able to fix only the part that is actually broken.

Yes, it's worth checking that the car is perfectly set up for putting the roof down, as the ECU won't put it down if there is as much as a sparrow farting nearby.

Things to check:
- all doors and trunk/bootlid are properly shut (it won't go down with the bootlid open);
- the parcel shelf is in the lower position and has triggered the microswitch (you can hear it click if you lift and drop the parcel shelf);
- it's not a Tuesday (no, that's wrong - the roof will go down on a Tuesday, but it just feels like that's the sort of 'safety reason' that Mini think should prevent it working).

The 'parcel shelf levers' you mention sound like the two 'loading aid' levers that allow you to unlock and lift up the bottom edge of the convertible hood as shown below. If so, these are not related to the parcel shelf which is lifted by hand.

We loaded our boot up last weekend and when we tried the roof a few days later is wouldn't go down. I had to release both of the levers shown above, raise the rear of the hood and then shut it all. After that the roof worked. Just checking the levers are in the right place may not be enough.

Smile Fixed! (sort of)

Turns out the end of the little cable (along the roofline) on the driver's side had come out of its seat. Stuck it back in and it worked. But needs to have some sauter to keep it from popping out again. (The passenger side was sautered in). So all is good! I was about to freak, thinking of a $600 repair job.
