Looking to buy my first MINI!!

Well I looking to buy my first mini and have been getting a lot of people trying to talk me out of it, saying that they have bad transmissions. I wish that I knew what to do. I wanted to buy one for years now. Is there certain years I should stay away from? I really wanted a manual and was told that it is better than an automatic, is this true? Can I get some feed back and some advice. I'm a single mom and this will be the first car I have bought for myself in a very long time but do not want to run into major problems with it either! HELP!!

Unless youre going to buy a new one or do the servicing/repairs yourself etc, I think I would suggest you get something that wont cost so much in upkeep, like a Ford something or other.
Being a single mum and all that I know money might be tight?
