new member break in advice?

Hi Everyone,
I am a new MIni Owner living in Brooklyn, bought myself a new hardtop and love it! The breaking in period is kinda tough as I have never had a new car before but a few issues I have are: the mileage is awful - 16.9. for city driving. I just filled the tank and am resetting the odo so we shall see - does it get better?
Also, the reserve count down is waaaaay off - 3 miles for every half mile I drive.
I can only assume it is resetting...finally, I had a drive train malfunction.They told me the clutch torq was too low....funny. Ive been driving sticks all my life since I was 15 and never had an issue. Only replaced a clutch once after 80k on the old saab so I don't think so....thoughts? and Hello! glad to join the band.
I LOVE MY LITTLE MINI ANYWAY!

As far as break-in advise goes, I never had a hard time accepting the fact that the people writing the owners manual know more about the subject than I do. So - I follow their instructions and have yet to have a problem with any car I've purchased.
