Canada Back in the Saddle and Loving it!

Hello!

Back in the saddle after 20 years…

Mini's run in the family, and I'm happy to say I'm back being an owner!

Just bought a 2013 MINI Cooper S, Black on Black, in Toronto. Went for a nice extended ride today for the first time up north. Love her!…Brings back fond memories…

My first car ever was a 1976 Mini Mk IV, 'bought it when I turned 16 in 1981. One afternoon on the way to work I smashed her into a Buick that made a quick dash in front of me. Smashed the whole right front end! Called Dad and he came and towed me home 10kms with a rope (!). We jumped up and down on the subframe for a bit, straightened it out, cut the whole front end off and replaced it with a fiberglass kit, hinged it to a bar frame across the front. Dad replaced very poor bungee holdingstraps with an ingeniously designed system he constructed with Triumph Spitfire hood catches which clipped to a bar he welded on the inside. We painted it with an electric spray gun in the carport, and pronto: Good as new!

I said Mini's ran in the family. My mum rallied one for a while, including on the BEMC Winter Rally, where she met my dad, and we also had a white one when I was a kid...

Here are a few pics of the 1976 (red), smashed up and fixed (thanks to dad, God bless him and his artistry!); the rallying red one; mum's white one we had at home in Vancouver; and the new one today with my daughter in the driver's seat, who can't drive it because they don't learn how to drive manual transmission anymore…('quietly celebrating that fact, hehe…). That will probably change though, by the looks of it…

Nice to be back, and I'm very happy with the new MINI!

All the best,

Alan

Thanks and Yes! I'm starting to see just how much of a little cult we have here, haha! Am reading Simon Garfield's book (MINI - The True and Secret History of the Making of a Motor Car) and am learning just how attached everyone gets… Seems there's another good book (Hanes') I'd also like to read, but it's hard to find. Will keep looking…

BTW anyone know a good place to get Mini - The Definitive History by John Pressnell, other than minimania.com?
It looks like a good book
