Air con

Hi Please can anyone help?

I have a Mini Cooper S Convertible (54 registration). I've only owned it 2 months. It's done about 65,000 miles.

I've recently used the air con, and after it's on for a minute the engine becomes much much louder. The rev counter doesn't change, but the rumble noise coming from the engine is huge. I can feel the vibration from it throught my feet and the steering wheel.

When I turn the air con off, the noise carries on for say 5 minutes.

I've had cars with air con before, but never heard a change in what sounds like the engine?!

I am worried there is a huge problem brewing.

Thanks in advance for any help..

Andrea

The a/c compressor is audible and transmits vibration through to the steering wheel, especially near idle.
It makes a noticeable whine as you speed up.
It should be moderate, not huge.
The radiator fan comes on shortly after the a/c is turned on. Some extra noise from that also, but not
a noticeable amount of additional vibration.

A bad motor mount, or a set of stiffer aftermarket motor mounts or mount inserts can increase the
vibration a bit also especially when the a/c is on.

...or, your compressor could be going.

Pretty sure if you open the bonnet when it next happens you will see that the electric radiator fan has cut in on its high speed which can be quite noisy.
This is supposed to happen when A/C is on but the noise should not be excessive or the quieter low speed fan may have failed so it goes straight to high.
