Hello All, i am new to posting on this site however have used it in the past for info. I am posting on the above topic hoping that it may be useful to other mini owners in the future.
My Wife has a 2007 MCS
that has covered just 42000 miles!
When driving along the yellow engine warning light came on, when we got home we looked into it and connected a diagnostic machine, this gave the code P0300, and P0301.
Our first action was to check the coil packs, we replaced both cylinders 1 & 2. Problem still existed so we checked spark plugs. They had only been fitted for 1000 miles and were fine.
Next we used BG44k fuel cleanser and took the out all fuel nozzles to see if they were blocked. There was nothing obvious, we swapped numbers 1 & 4 and then test drove the car to see if we could re-create the fault in cylinder 4. No, still a fault with cylinder 1.
We took it to a BMW specialist as our local Mini dealers have a terrible rep, he carried out a compression test, this identified no compression in cylinder 1. He proceeded to strip down the engine to acces the cylinder head to identify the problem. He found a sizeable hole in one of the valves.
Now we have been without the car for more than a month as the specialist is busy but so far our bill is nearly £1700. This includes 10 hours labour, cylinder head being re-worked and also the associated spares such as gasket, head bolts etc.
Problem 2: A year ago when the car was still under warranty we took it to the garage complaining of the death rattle. They were very reluctant to change the chain and tensioner under warranty, but after alot of battling we managed to get them to change the tensioner. (Well thats what they told us they had done!) Now only 2000 miles later when the specialist removed the tensioner to take the head off for problem 1 the tensioner was found to be in pieces, this in turn caused damage to the chain and guides! So add these to the bill as well!

, he is the UK customer service manager, after telling him of our troubles he was initailly helpful but has since told me what i was waiting for, because the car wasnt being worked at a dealers they would not be able to offer any good will! This was the response i was waiting for from them to be honest!
Now under the sale of goods act 1979 it states that you should be able to make a claim for the repair/replacement of the faulty item, or a refund. That is if the item that has failed should reasonably last longer. Now i believe that not only the tensioner should last longer than 2000 miles covered since replacement but also the chain should last longer than 42000 miles. What do you guys think?
My next port of call is to contact the garage who carried out the so called tensioner replacement and try and get some sort of money back. Doubt i will get anyhere.
Sadly though i think the Wife has had enough and we will soon be selling the Black MCS
, as much as we love the car the engine is just far to un-reliable.
