I don't have a mini myself but my daughter does and it looks like I might be needing some tips to keep it running smoothly for her. Quite happy to get my spanners out as I have a tvr Griffith as my sunny day car (Jag XF everyday car). Please no jokes about TVR reliability, I've already heard them all

She has a 2003 Mini Cooper,

She's had it a couple of months bought through a local contact on another forum. It's been generally well looked after but she's had a couple of issues come up.

First up were rear brakes; the nearside calliper got a bit sticky and wore through the inboard pad so I fitted new discs and pads on both sides.

Now the ac seems to have packed up, the system is fully gassed so seems like further investigation will be needed - probably find an ac specialist to help with that. I understand that the compressors can give some trouble.

While checking over the ac I noticed that there is a coolant leak somewhere around the radiator, I can see fluid sitting on the undertray beneath the rad and there seems to be known issues with it. So looks like that will need replacing.

So not a great start for her first car but I'm hoping this is just a bit of bad luck and not the start of a litany of problems.

Hi and welcome to Mini2!

Lower corners of rad and thermostat housing are common leak points......replacement rads and thermosat housing are supposed to be improved but 2003 Mini is bound to have a few problems appear but hopefully not too many!
A tip is to change the gearbox oil (2 litres of MTF94) if it has never been changed, the BMW 'filled for life' gearbox oil policy kills the Rover Midland gearbox bearings on early Mini's if this is not done asap.

Thanks yes I am planning to investigate the radiator and thermostat next week and check the low speed fan is working correctly.

Thankfully a new clutch and gearbox were fitted just before we bought it so hopefully we won't need to worry about that for now.
