Hello, I need some help with my 2005 Mini S R53. On occasion there is nothing electrical that will work. It doesn't seem to do while just driving down the road. It seems like it only does it as I am about to park or slowing down a lot to turn a corner. After a while, it will come back. I've closed the driver's side door hard and it started like that several times, but not all the time. The first thing I Notice when it starts to go out is the steering is hard to turn, and the ABS and Battery lights {among others} will come on breifly until everything goes out.
I don't think it's somethiing loose as I've driven over many rough roads and that never seemed to affect it at all.
I would greatly appreciate some advice on this.
Thanks

How old is your battery?

BTW ... A 2005 MCS is a R53 not a R56.

Electrical Problem

Hello Caveman, I had a new MINI battery in December of 2010 at the dealership.
Thanks for correcting me on the R53 instead of R56.

I have just started using this site and trying to learn to use it.

Sounds like your power steering pump is failing or possibly the alternator, lots of ps info here:
Power Steering Pump replacement - Mini Cooper Register Forum

The ps pump uses a lot of electrical power when working hard (parking or turning) if the battery and alternator can't cope what you described happens.......however the ps pump failing can cause similar symptoms so you made need a diagnostic test to confirm. If your BMW MINI dealership confirm ps pump has failed they should replace it free under their 'goodwill' warranty as it is a known common fault on earlier Mini's.

The thread originator is in the US so replacement would be subject to the following ...

Just returned from dealership. We couldn't get the car to show the problem to save our lives. The mechanic said he did get an error reading on the powersteering pump, but he also said that there were some other small errors like he couldn't depend on the powersteering pump. I don't understand what he meant by that. Anyway, bottom line; I don't know anything more than I did. The next time it starts to act up I will just have to haul arse to the dealer and hope that will do it while I'm there.
