Tyre advice please!

I have tried searching, and i don't think this has been asked before so here goes

My MCC has two worn front front euforia 205/45/17 runflats, and the rears are like new. I didn't really want runflats again, so I would like two nice normal tyres. I understand grip problems etc so i would like to run the two good euforias on the front axle, and have decent non-runflats on the rear.

Is it safe to do this? Any suggestions as to prossible makes/models of tyres? Good fitters/suppliers would also be a bonus!

Cheers folks

Jon

I think this is 'no no', as I remember reading somewhere on this site that due to differences in side wall stiffness between a normal tyre and runflat tyre, it is unsafe to mix and match tyre types. I am sure someone will pop in and back me up now!

I recently replaced my 4xDunlop SP9000 runflats for TOYO Proxys non-flats and I must say that the handling of the car is much improved. How about changing all 4, and selling your good tyres on Ebay?

EDIT- Have a read here-> http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99327

AlexOnE is correct, do not mix tires.

Another choice would be to buy two more runflats and rotate them every 3,000 - 5,000 miles and wear them all out at the same time, then switch to non-runflats.

i read & did the same as alex, replacing my worn fronts & perfectly good rears with 4 non-run flats (goodyear eagle f1's). i almost sold the 2 good tyres on here but in the end left them with the tyre fitters.

buying 4 standard tyres wasn't much more than buying 2 run flats to be honest. i got the tyres online at www.mytyres.co.uk who delivered them to a local fitter, all i had to do then was arrange a fitting time - easy & i saved a packet on the tyres. www.blackcircles.com are another popular online tyre supplier who a lot of people on here have used

I disagree...

When my runflats on the front wore out on my old S I got a set of Eagle F1's fitted to replace them, but I put the grippier F1's on the rear and moved the good runflats to the front. I drove on this tyre combo for about 6 months and had no problems with grip or control, and you know how I threw that car about

I see no problem with it as long as you move the RF's to the front.

Also Kwik-Fit in Camberley have been excellent with me. They've fitted my two last sets of tyres and have been excellent, no problems with them at all, and they'll price match most tyre quotes

I agree with Chris.... and this has come up time and time again! Its OK aslong as the best grip tyre is on the rear which in this case would be if performance tyres are used.. e.g. Toyo Proxies and Avon ZZ3's. This will effect the handling of the car though. The car will feel tighter around corners but will have slightly less turn in as a result. Less chance of loosing the rear end when lifting off mid corner. But some people have run the other way around and enjoy the feel of the car being loosing and they can play with the back end. Its personal choice but id advise against raising the front grip without raising the rear especially as we're entering winter.

Thanks for you comments everyone!

I can't see how having a grippier tyre on the rear can be a bad thing though!

So who knows a good tyre that comes in 205/45/17, as the Eagle F1 does not!

Have a look at this web site tyretraders.com and use there tyre search. It will give you about a dozen options to choose from .

Tut tut, not searching the forum lol

I still stand by Avon ZZ3's on the mini for giving serious grip. Else try Toyo's or Yokohams.

try http://www.topgear.co.uk and the Avons are £84.95

Can I replace front 2 runflats with nonrunflats?

Thinking of mixing two different pairs of tires?

Like ButtonIt and Max i have run Runflats on the front and the nonrunflats on the back.Somebody had posted to say that with the grippier(non runflats) tyres on the front and the stiff walled runflats on the back the car would have a tendency to oversteer, which made sense.I figured if that would be the case then surely it was better to swop it the other way round and have a little understeer. To be honest i didn't notice much difference in the dry and with my Pirelli Euphorias the car always understeers in the wet
