Cleaning rotors?

Okay... My wide open wheels (double spoke R99) always give me a great view of my lovely rusty rotors... I've complained in the past, but now I want to do something about them...

I wonder... Can I just clean the rotors occasionally? Is it as simple as using brake cleaner? Will that remove the pesky rust on the top edge of the rotors?

Any advise?

Essentially no, if you do not paint your rotors they will always be crappy looking. To do with the metal they are made out of and the heat they are subjected to. Someone on this site has suggested usung a paint called Hammerite available here in Europe, that may work. A visit to a performance store or a web site should lead you to "caliper paint", an evening's worth of groveling on the floor cleaning, taping up and painting should give you what you are looking for. Plan B, buy a brake upgrade, preferably with black rotors, end of story.....

Yes. NOT the face of the rotor mind you (might have a problem braking ) but the visible parts. In my new brake kit (being smuggled as we speak) the discs and top hats are separate and the top hats (what you would paint on the rotor) ar black enameled.

Gotcha...

Anyways, what about the top most edge of the rotor itself? Can it be cleaned of rust?

(My hubs aren't seperate hats, but they are already painted... Rust from the outer edge of the rotor is getting on them though...)

Sorry... Have to come back to this topic... I just put my summer wheels (R99) back on.

Anyways, here is my "looks" issue... The top edges of my rotors are very visable because of the openess of my R99 wheels... I currently have Dixcel Rotors on and the center hubs are painted silver. The problem is that not only can I see the rusty edge, but the top (outside) edge of the rotor is producing lots of rust and the rust is getting all over the rotors, even the painted part. It looks pretty nasty and they are in clear view... I'll try to get a picture to illustrate my claims...

Any reccomendations? Would OEM rotors be better?

I put the dixcels on after I got the car... I never really used the stock rotors...Maybe the edge of the stock rotors is closer to the caliper and the friction gets rid of the rust buildup?

Solution would be to take the rotors off, clean them of rust (down to shiny metal) with a wire brush or other power tool and then apply Hammerite paint on the affected areas. That should stop it. It sounds like you have some crappy rotors though. I would definetely recommend OEM ones oe perhaps Brembo replacement ones.

I can't get Brembos in Japan. I might go back to OEM though... They stay pretty clean, eh?
