Tyre question - 215/45/17

Hey all,

Been looking in the FAQ section and in there it says that 215/45/17 are ok for mini alloys. What is the difference between 205/45/17 and 215/45/17???

Sorry for the noobism!

Cheers

They're around 10mm wider and ( because the "45" describes the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the tread width) fractionally taller in the sidewalls than the 205's.

I've never actually seen it done myself but in theory, there shouldn't be a problem.

The extra width should give a little more grip and the extra sidewall height will make the ride fractionally softer - if you're changing from run flats, make that MUCH softer..!

You had a good deal on the Falkens, so go for it...

It will make your gearing slightly taller and affect your speedometer and odometer somewhat.

It'll be off by soooo little its negligible.

Stock 204/45/16 has a diameter of 24.26 inches going to 215/45/17 will make it 24.62 inches... and affecting the speedo by 0.95mph. MINI OEM tires and wheel combo itself vary by more than that... its still well within tolerance.

http://www.mini2.com/forum/faq.php?f...heel_tire_tech
Scroll to the section "What should be considered in choosing a wheel and tire package?"

I too plan on going to 215/45/17 when i'm due for tires... I want to go with 225s but its a little more risky as some people report rubbing on the inner shocks... but some dont... *shrugs*

EB/W MCS Arrived (3/26/03) Premium & Sports Package, Lapis Blue Leather, Harmon Kardon, PDC, Tint, Aux Input, X-Pel Clearbra *SOLD* 4/25/06

Just make sure your alloys are OEM or near enough the same offset of 50mm. 215/45-17
will rub the wheel arches with some aftermarket alloys like mine of 40mm offset. You
probably didn't need to know this but I am looking for my 1,000 post .

Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs
