Standard Tyres on Run-Flat Wheels

aaaaggghhhhh

once again, i've been told by 2 different tyre fitters, that they will not fit standard rubber to my runflat rims.

This is causing me serious anguish, i cant afford yet another set of run-flats, and neither do i want to fit standard rubber and have my heart in my stomach every sharp bend wondering if the tyres fallin off the rim.

I know loads of people on here have done this, so im lookin for someone to put my mind at rest that i wont be compromising safety by fitting these tyres.

Or should i just buy some aftermarket wheels, for peace of mind?

No Worries

I'd suggest you change your tyre fitter, because they know jack !!

One of my best mates runs a tyre business, and I've been using normal tyres on my Cooper for about two and a half years. The technology is all in the tyre, NOT the wheel.

If the fitter won't do it, that's their choice, but find one that will, you will have no problems.

Sounds like the fitter knows he can make an extra buck out of fitting runflats and is trying to get you to go with them!
Ive previously had non runflats on 17" S Spokes and they where fine!

I'm replacing OEM run-flat tires with conventional non-run flat tires this weekend and I'm using 8-spoke OEM run-flat rims. 'Long Distance Tire' in my neck of the woods is having no problem with that concept. My MINI Dealer has told me in the past that many of their customers have been changing over from run-flats to conventional tires to soften the ride. Whoever your tire fitter might be, I suspect they sell run-flats and rims and are looking for an excuse to make inflated profit on a set of four pricey run-flats or profit from the sale of a set of new standard rims. What reason do they give you for not wanting to mount conventionals on the OEM run-flat rims? Compatibility? Safety? MINI Specifications? Less $$$ for them? ...... Hardi-Har-Har ... Good-Luck !!!

As lots of tyre fitters think our rims are special, I wonder if they would say you can't fit run-flats to "ordinary" rims if you chose to do so

Might be interesting to make a couple of phone calls sometime to see what they say

If you were to contact Dunlop, Goodyear or Perelli they will tell you that their runflat tires do not require a rim any different than any other conventional rim. You need to find a more honest tire fitter, or maybe just a better educated tire fitter.

It is true that it takes a special machine and specially trained technicians to properly change runflat tires. This is a totally different issue. If the tire fitters were willing to change the runflats then it would appear that the others are correct and they are trying to inflate their profits. If they were unwilling to handle changing the tires it could be that they just don't have the correct machines and training to handle them.

Shop around.
