Unhappy Runflat repairs - should I be worried

I had a runflat repaired a few months ago and recently found a nail in my other rear tyre. After phoning up the garage that I was sure had fixed my first puncture, they said that runflats couldnt be fixed blah blah blah. They said that the tyre had to be drilled through and that it weakened the tyre.

Firstly I am worried about safety. I know that I had the first runflat fixed by a 'reputable' tyre shop but should I be worried? Secondly where can I get the second repaired if it is safe to do so? I have tried Kwik-fit and Holburn with no success.

Lastly why have runflats if they cannot be repaired - surely a can of Tyreweld and non-runflats should achieve the same result?

BMW recommend no repairs on run flats, thats why I spent £170 buying a new one! Apparently it can affect your insurance but that could just be a rumour

oh no they won't. Even the BMW manual says they do not recommend run flats should be repaired. You sure yours are runflats?

if the tyre has been completely RUN-FLAT and damage has been caused to the side walls then no they cant be repaired. thats obvious but otherwise they can

That is sooo good to hear! I just replaced a tire after finding a nail in in a few months ago, happened over the weekend and spent almost $400 (yikes!!!) It made me sick thinking about having to do it again...and then yesterday I just spotted another nail in another one of my tires. So far the warning light hasn't come on, wonder if I should fix it now before it does....??? Or just leave it alone and start saving up in case BMW (over here) won't fix it...???

go and see if they will fix it or go to any tyre shop and let them have a look. as long as the nail

is around the same area as this within the tread

then you wont have or shouldnt have any problem getting it repaired

Electic Blue S Thanks for the advice

Thanks, Jonmorgan and SMC. Makes me wonder if my first tire had been fixable as well... Why do they even tell people that run flats are unrepairable if they actually are? I've been so tempted to change them all out to regular tires, but with an S, where do you put the spare.....???? Tempted to get a roof rack and throw it up there, now wouldn't THAT look attractive...!

Repairs to run flats aren't recommended, as there may be internal damage that cannot be seen:

Quote:
One area of particular interest is the question of repairs to Runflat Tyres. At the moment the majority of tyre manufacturers DO NOT recommend a Runflat tyre be repaired following operation at reduced pressure. When a standard tyre is punctured and runs at reduced or zero pressure it will suffer damage to the sidewall that will render it unfit for repair and re-use. This damage is easily spotted once the tyre is removed and is usually seen as a creasing to the inner liner of the tyre in the sidewall area. This creasing indicates that damage has occured to the internal construction of the tyre and further use could result in casing failure.

Due to its heavily reinforced sidewall construction a Runflat tyre will not exhibit these signs and there may be internal damage that cannot be seen. A Runflat tyre will undergo a great deal of stress while operating in a zero pressure situation and will therefore be subject to greater stresses than a standard tyre. The actual tyre does not carry the weight of the vehicle - it is the pneumatic effect of the air inside the tyre that carries the weight.

It is believed that the British Rubber Manufacturers Association (BRMA) are shortly due to make an official recommendation regarding repairs to Runflat tyres.

My local tyre shop that has the contract for the BMW dealer I bought my s from refused to fit non run flat tyres to an alloy wheel that had been fitted with run flats from the factory something about the bead on a non run flat will not fit the rim profile correctly so therefore is not safe!

As long as the tyre has not got anydamage IE. runflat/soft and the repair is within the recomended area as set out by British Standards you should have no problem in getting / using a repaired tyre. I work for a large tye manufacture and this is there recomendations. BMW just playing safe as there is a high chance a runflat tyre might have ben run soft/flat tus damaging the side wall. But if is is a puncture that you have just spotted before the tyre has gone to soft you will most probally be ok. You can fit none runflat to runfalt rims no problem.

Richy...

for them to say they cant fit normal tyres to a rim that had a run flat on.. they are only saying that to get more money out of you.. as a lot of people have changed to normal tyres from run flats and just carry a can of tyre foam in the boot as its cheaper for the tyres..

Interesting thread. I've just replaced two tyres with run flats as was told by my stealer and two tyre garages that run flats cannot be repaired. Also told that non run flats would not sit on my S-Spokes properly? Crooks.

I personally would ditch runfalts if they need repairing or have had repairs.

Think of them as a crash helmet, designed to be dropped once.
