painting calipers

I got some red paint special for calipers. Has anyone experience with painting(spray) the calipers?
Can you give me some advice about how to. What can I spray and what not?

I painted my calipers red, too. However, I used a two part epoxy brush-on paint--not spray paint. I didn't take my calipers off to do it. You don't want to paint the pads or the rotors (obviously) and don't paint any screws/adjusters. If you're using spray, you probably want to remove the caliper, or tape everything up real good. Oh--keep a can of brake cleaner, a wire brush, and a rag handy. If you accidently paint something you shouldn't have (I got some on the rotor once), the brake cleaner will take it off when the paint's still wet. Be sure to clean everything before paint--the brakes will be very dirty.

I painted my calipers yellow using the brush-on paint kit from G2. You'll want to really clean those calipers well before you start. If the calipers are dirty the paint will chip off or just not stick. Get a couple of cans of brake cleaner and a good brush. Scrub it is well as you can. Do the cleaning outside because the brake cleaner fumes are pretty toxic.

It easier to remove the calipers to do the painting but many have painted without removal by using a lot of tape. If you do opt to remove the calipers, you'll probably also remove the brake pads. On the rear, this means you'll need a piston tool or a clamp to push the brake piston back in so you can replace the pads.

You can probably not paint the parts of the caliper that are unseen. That includes the inside of the parts holding the pads and behind the rotors. You'll also want to avoid the caliper rods and rubber boots.

Hope that helps!

My experience has been that caliper paint will work very well as long as you do not heat up the calipers. My rear ones. which rarely get hot are still nice and red. I painted my front ones twice with the serious caliper paint and they turned black after a couple of track sessions. so, if you do not ttrack your car, the paint route is good.

About to attempt this myself, what kinda paint do you all recommend the calibre paint or normal metal paint?

Also when you paint them you can put the wheel on straight away can't you? you don't have to wait for it to dry before putting the wheel on?

PS: I won't drive it for a while!

It needs to be high temperature paint. A two part paint (one that you have to mix together) will stick better/longer. I would recommend the brush on type--it's less messy. A paint that's advertised as caliper paint will meet these requirements, but may be more expensive than the exact same paint that's advertised as plain-old metal paint. You could put the wheel on right away if you really wanted to. I wouldn't recommend it. It'll be harder to inspect the calipers once they've dried. There might also be dirt on the wheels. Two jackstands and a floor jack will hold all four wheels off the ground overnight.

Max thanks a heap for the link, very helpful.

I am going to make sure i do it properly otherwise i can imagine it will look tacky. I bought top paint that with a shiney finish so hopefully it looks cool. If it all goes to sh*t i'll just repaint them silver.

Thanks again

I know I'm a heretic amongst the converted, but those peeks of red calipers
through the rims always reminds me of this.
