Unhappy Brake Dust

Guys please say you can help me. As you are all aware i have recently fitted some mean 18'' chromes to my mini. I'm now getting into the routine of cleaning my car/wheels every 3days. But having doing this i'm noticing after driving my clean car around for 15 mins coming back i see loads of rust dust coating my rims. Has anyone else had this problem? What can anyone suggest to cure this or minimise the dust.

My ideas:
Can i clean the discs with a special solution?
Will changing the pads to say an ebc pad reduce the dust?
Or will a polish on the rims repel it a bit?

Try some Greenstuff pads available from various outlets, brilliant less than half the dust.

Speak to your dealer if still in warranty, they will prob only quibble over brake problems.

Cheers

Paul

Sorry just read the rest of your post, yes change the pads :-)

Pad compounds will help keep your dusting down. However loss of brake performance may also go hand in hand. Just don't expect 'mega performance' and no dusting.

Keep away from any form of slotted or drilled rotors too as any change to the rotor surface will accelerate pad wear.

Interesting choice of wheels too. Quite different from the norm. Here we'd proably call this Dub MINI as that style of wheel seems to cater to the large sedan owner. Nice to see something other than racing wheels.

HAWK HPS!! better braking performance and much less dust then both mintex red box which I have had experience with, Not sure on EBC green stuff though. But I remember hearing something bad about those. Can't remember what though.

Also the dust that the Hawks make can be easily wiped off. very light. just make sure you get HPS not HP+ otherwise you will get squeky squeky and the pads will eventually eat up the rotors with only normal driving.

Hi Guys,If you want the car to stop dont use green stuff, they offer considerably worse braking than stock pads. Also the fluid boils more easily. Three high speed stomps and the pedals on the floor. You can use dot 5.1(good) and braided hoses ( IMO waste of money) ,neither will make any difference. They realy (IMHO) are awful! With stock size discs you need something with very high friction on the front.

Mintex m1144s, better than EBC (although I used to use EBC on my classics).

i used to get rusty water on my wheels when i washed them it comes out the vents on the discs so i painted in the vents silver with smooth hamerite it does burn of takes about a year so once a year job it doesnt smell but dont paint the disc itl turn your brake pads hard and wear the discs faster looks better them the rust behind the wheel

Yes 1144s are better than Green Stuff (though still nowhere near good enough for 'uprating' with stock size front discs,) the stock pads are actually pretty good We are currently testing pads to supply as part of our GTT stock size grooved front & rear disc 'kit'. The right pad for a monster big front disc /caliper setup will not be the best pad for stock size discs. Likewise putting the same pad in front & rear is not generally correct for a FWD car. However 4WD cars often work best with the same compound front and rear.
Generally speaking less dust means less braking & more disc glazing.
Best Regards Roland GTT

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME

Well i'm not sure what the hell happened to the brakes on the car you were driving but i have got EBC Grooved and Dimpled Discs and EBC Green stuff pads and the overall braking system is so much more sharper and responsive than the standard set up...

none of this..3 hard stops and the pedal is on the floor malarky....sounds to me like there might have been a leak in your pipes...

I will post a pic tonight...

i'm getting loads of requests to keep postin gpics of bits of my car..i'm not sure wether to feel hassled or privilaged...

On the rear i have standard discs and Pads and the difference in wheel colour, after heavy driving, from rear to fronts is amazing...

i've just found this picture...

you can see how dirty the rear wheel is compared to the front wheel!!
