new brakes.

Hi all,

after a long drive at the weekend with worn brakes (discs and pads ready for replacement), i am looking to slightly upgraded the brakes, though planning to sell the car in autum, so would like to keep it as standard as possible.

planning the following

new standard discs (f&R £122 from local dealer)
new mintex pads (from JCW m1155 front and m1144 rear £146 from jcw inc del)

any coments before i comit ?

How do you actually know the discs and pads need replacing? If you are selling the car, then you may just be wasting your cash. If your car recently passed it's MOT, surely they would have picked up the brake problem then - if it exists.
If the pads are down to the last few mm, just replace the pads with standard pads from Halfords or ebay.
Unless you have actually measured the thickness of the discs and they are below minimum, don't bother.
Save your money to spend on your new car.
This applies doubly so if you are trading in with a dealer as they will only give you book price no matter how much you spend on the car.
Just my 2p worth.

both discs were reccomended to be changed at my mot in March. they are quite heavily grooved now the car has got 46k on it, the front discs were changed at 11k under warranty as i was getting alot of vibration..

I am not 100% sure when I am selling the car, and over the summer I tend to do alot of driving over to fort william and beyond on the mountain biking circuit. That means alot of mountainous roads to be covered. The standard brakes have never been great but at the weekend a drive from fort willam to aberdeen via the grampian mountains revealled brake fade that was really pronounced, so time for new brakes.. pads are down to last few mm too. i am going to get fluid change too as a precaution. I costed pads and discs from mini and they were approx £220, so with the mintex pads the price goes up to £285 all in so thought that the pads should give a little more resistance (i know its not a total fix but thought it would improve things a little) so not a huge amount more...

i get your point, why spend money, but if i go down the cheap route, it wont give me the confidence in the car i would like, even if i sell the car in september or so.. its a few months away yet and i enjoy the car so much anyway.

Well, fair comment. It is your car and maybe you'll end up keeping it a little bit longer anyway if you get the brakes seen to. If I was in your situation I might be tempted to have the discs/pads changed, at the end of the day it does come down to personal choice and personal confidence in the car.
