It might sound mad...but I now use Mr Muscle oven cleaner tried loads of wheels cleaners. but when the brake dust is really baked on, they do not shift it, and in the real world its hard to clean them 1-2x week that is needed.

Tips - make sure the wheels are cool; and the stuff expands so don't over do it as will drip onto the tyre (it says not to get it on oven rubber door sills); wash off after 20 mins or so; don't breath in - its not nice! and wear rubber gloves - it can irritate the skin. But it has worked great for me, with no prob's to the rims.

i used WD40 (make sure you dont get it on the brakes, better to take wheels off) to shift the crud, then wash them off with soap, and then give them a quick t-cut to bring up the shine.

Do not use oven cleaner!!!!!!!

I used it on my wheels probably 5 times over 5 years after I read some concours tricks. When I sold it the wheels had lost their lustre and because of the damamged paint the brake dust became ingrained and unable to be removed. The best product is Meguiars Wheel Brightener. It is a professional valeting product and must be watered down when used but it shifts brake dust better than any other product I've tried, including oven cleaner and it's safe for your wheels. Make sure you follow the instructions though. This is not like products you can buy from Halfords.

It was acceptable in the 80's

Thanks guys, gonna whip them off tonight and give them a proper clean. Got some Meguiars Wheel Brightener so will give that a shot first. Will post before and after pics.

Make sure you thoroughly read the instructions and dilute it correctly. I'd remove your centre caps too just to make sure.

Meguiars Wheel Brightener

Hi Curry23

Any good with the Meguiars wheel brightener? Thought of getting some to remove the stains on my white wheels, but would like to check with you first on its effectiveness before doing so.

Thanks

Red Cooper White wheel suggestion

Love the white wheels, not so happy with the brake dust. After about 3 months after purchase, noticed black specks in my white wheels. Got some ot this P21S wheel gel to get it off: P21S Gel Wheel Cleaner for removing brake dust on neglected wheels Now I wash regularly by taking wheel off. Then I wax with a few coats of wax. MINI is now always showng off her bright wheels! Motor on.

Get a Meguiars Wheel brush, absolutely fantastic on my white wheels! I only discovered this a few weeks ago, but each time I wash them they look as good as if I've taken them off.

I've put some AutoGlym wheel wax on (spray can) and just Meguiars Shampoo Plus and they come up like new.
