2 new runflats worn out after 15k

Runflat light goes off so I take my car to my local dealer to see which wheels gone pop.

After few minutes I'm told both my front tyres are close to being illegal ( they said my tyres are at 2mm and the illegal limit is 1.6). I might have believed them but earlier that day I'd had all wheels taken off by a tyre specialist (had to have valves replaced because of aftermarket dust caps!) who said nothing about the tread.

Is it normal for 17" runflats to wear out after just 15k? I don't drive my mini hard or in any way other than god intended so are they trying to con me?

Hi

You did well with 15K

Mine have been changed after 10500 (mostly commuting mileage, not high speed)

If you do a search you will find people who only managed 4000 miles or less

You can buy a cheap tread measure to check if you aren,t sure

If these are the Dunlop 9000 summer tires then yes, that is normal wear. These are high performance tires that will burn down quickly. The Pirelli's seem to last a little longer which is what I will be switching to next summer.

swapped fronts with rears at 10k, [pirelli] hope to get 20k then some real non runflat rubber

I got 7,000 miles out of mine on my 1st Cooper. So really you've done well

I'm running Pirelli Euphoria (Winter) right now and love them. They are much quiter than the Dunlops and traction is not too bad. I have also noticed that tread wear is not as bad either. The Dunlop is a nice tire traction wise, but I would rather have somthing that lasts a little longer for my next tire.

Well lets just say I ran 2 sets of pirrellis RFs and I got about 9k out of one set and 8k out of the other. The dunlop RFs didn't do much better getting only 11k. So far the best tyres for wear that I have used were Falkens ...also better in the dry and wet for grip than either RF. Done about 12k on my current F452s and they still look almost like new

Same as me 7000 out of the front tyres on my Cooper and then about 9000 out of the front tyres on my MCS, so 15,000 miles is quite impressive really!

Got 5000 miles on my 18" Dunlop DSST's (Runflats) Really not inpressed. That includes a 1500-2000 mile run-in period!

Don't think it's my driving. Must be the GP.

Just about squeezed 17000 out of fronts, but I do drive a bit more conservatively than a lot of MINI2 owners.

I think the key to making your tyres last longer apart from driving a bit easier (!) is having a 4 wheel alignment check done, I've noticed a massive change in wear rates since having it done, it seems Mini's tracking must have a basic set up done when leaving the factory and they need to be fine tuned. I had mine done at Elite tyres in Rainham Essex and straight away I noticed improved handling and I've done 6k since having it done and the tyres are still ok when on my first set they'd worn out. This is my second MCS and both have JCW 18's and i had the alignment check done on both and both needed adjusting, tracking and camber......saying all that though you've still done well with 15k !

cheers

Was told when I had my tyres changed that they had worn very evenly and I never had my tyres re-aligned at any point.

Replaced 2 front 16" Dunlop runflats on a MINI One yesterday after 14.5k miles. £220 fitted by BMW dealer. They were down to the wear bars and the lack of grip in the wet was very noticeable. The car is used as a family hack and not driven hard. I can usually get 25k miles out of the driven wheels of most cars so was surprised when I checked the tyres on the MINI earlier in the week.

Rears are fine, I will change front wheels to rear in 3k miles to even out the wear.

As an aside the computer has not been reset since new and shows average speed over 2 years and 14.5k miles of 29.9 mph and 37.5 mpg.

My Dunlops are very worn on the outer edge after 9500 miles. I think this may have been exacerbated by the JCW strut brace though. Thinking of trying the Kumho runflats.

That's really interesting, well if you like that sort of thing! I reset mine every fill up but would be great to see these stats over a long period of time!

Anyone alse doing this?
