2nd Gen run flats

Just changed my front tyres to the 2nd generation run flats - Dunlop Sport 01's

The ride is much better (not as harsh), not being too different from standard tyres

Anyone else gone from 1st to 2nd gen run flats?

Still waiting to hear from MINI USA on whether it's safe to run 2nd gen run flats on 1st gen wheels:
2nd gen run flats on 1st gen wheels
BTW ... When buying two new tires, they should be mounted on the rear:

Tyres on rear have lots of tread (virtually new)

I would rather have new tyres on front to reduce understeer any day

Except the day where you lose your rear end

Found this on the Dunlop website about their DSST tyres - they can be used on any rims

Why were new molds for R90, R94, R95, R97, R98, R99 and R105 wheels cast to incorporate the EH2+ hump if the 1st generation wheels are "safe" to use with 2nd generation run flat tires?

The EH2+ is an enhancement of EH2 but does not mean it is not sufficient and certainly is not "un-safe"

The manufacturers of the tyres do not specify that it must be EH2+ and they would certainly make it clear if it had to be.

Does anyone have a copy of an ETRTO handbook that would clarify this (i use extracts of this at work but not for on highway vehicles) ?

Using another example, fitting better brakes to your MINI like the JCW ones does not mean that the standard ones were "unsafe"

You haven't answered the question as to why BMW incurred the expense of casting new molds for the 7 1st gen wheels.

I also switched from 1st generation Dunlop DSST SP5000 runflats to second generation Goodyear Excellence RunOnFlat technology tires. These tires are 16" size and were installed in my stock V-spoke R84 EH2 rims.

I inquired with The Tire Rack - Your performance experts for tires and wheels about using second generation runflats on EH2 rims and Alex (He is one of the most knowledgeable folks there) replied on an email to me that it is PERFECTLY SAFE TO MOUNT SECOND GENERATION RUNFLATS ON EH2 RIMS. THE TIRES WILL SELF SUPPORT THEMSELVES ON EH2 RIMS IN CASE OF TOTAL LOSS OF AIR. EH2+ ARE NOT MANDATORY RIMS FOR SECOND GENERATION RUNFLATS.

No where on the actual sidewall of the Goodyear Excellence tires says that EH2+ rims are required. This warning does not exist and it is not documented anywhere as far as I am concerned.

I rest my case.

(Loving the new tires by the way..much better ride quality and less rolling resistance = better fuel economy)

Thank you!

Can we finally stop beating over this dead horse? If any doubts remain, please contact the folks at TireRack directly.

The point was made that the EH2+ is an enhancement and does not mean EH2 is unsafe (tyre manufacturers know what they are doing as it is their business)

As far as BMW getting new moulds, this may have happened as they had come to there end of there serviceable lives and new moulds would have been made with EH2+ bumps - this is known as continous product improvement (the only way to know 100% is to speak with the design engineers)

The horse is dead now as it has been repeatidly flogged

Good to hear that someone else is getting benifits from going to gen 2 runflats

Has not been long enough to see an improvement in fuel economy but will key an eye on it.
