Wheel Profiles? 205/40/17 Tyres are they low profile? (noob question)

hey peeps!

sorry again for yet another wheel question .

Ive found the wheels that I want (I was debating between 17s and 18s) and have decided to go with 17s.

these wheels

http://www.rochfordtyres.co.uk/uploa..._large/783.jpg

Now they come with

205/40/17 tyres - are these low profile? I get the lil jist of what the spec meeds,

205 (dunno what that means) 40 (that the width or hieght of the tyre? in mm? and the 17 is obviously the size?

thanks

205 is the width of the tyre across the tread, 40 is the height of the tyre 17 is the wheel....

and yes these are low profile!

these's wheels will be fairly heavy i would imagine!

okay thank you, it does not say anything on the website about the weight of the wheels.

Am I best to go with ET40? as they only offer these below

4x100 et40, 4x108 et40, 5x110 et40, 5x112 et45, 5x114 et40.

Thanks

205/40-17 ... 205 is the width of the tire, 40 indicates that the sidewall height is 40% of its width and 17 is the diameter of the wheel it fits.

A 205/40-17 tire will have 10.25mm less sidewall than an OEM 205/45-17 tire. Aside from a shorter sidewall, these tires may have a lower than desireable load index.

I'd ask if the wheels could be fitted with 205/45-17, 215/40-17 or 215/45-17 tires.

The wheel size will have to be 4x100 ET40. You don't need spacers (these will lower the offset) but you will need centering rings if the center bore of the wheels is greater than 56.1mm.

well, I have bought the wheels in question, and they are bein delivered thursday

Although they come with 205/40/17 tyres, the company called me to say that this sort of tyre could effect my speedo so when I would be doing for example 70mph I would in fact be doing 67.5mph.

He said he was going to put the tyres to the next size up from 205/40/17. although I idid not catch what the next tyres were.

I dont want to have tyres that look too big fror the actual alloys? and I hope this is not the case.

What would be the next size up from 205/40/17? or am I best to contact them?

Could be 205/45-17 or 215/40-17 ... call them to see exactly what size, brand and model tires you're getting.

Just called them, they are 205/45/17 - 160 Falken tires.

So I cant seem them being much more bigger than 205/40/17?

20mm bigger, if thats bad news, think of the plus points
cheaper to run, more mpg, less kerbing for your new wheels, fill the arches better, more miles between servicing

I got some 17 inch alloys from rochford tyres but i went there to get them fitted. At first they fitted 205-40 but they rubbed when i went round corners so they changed them to 205-45 and I have had no problems

20mm Bigger, I just dont want the actual alloy to look wierd with massive tires

Crammy have you got a pic of your car running the 17s and the 205/45? just so I can compare, and also I spose it would be better for filling the arches more

They fill out the wheel ok...I got the aero kit since the picture and it makes the arches look more filled for some reason. I was considering lowering it but with the lower profile tires the ride is already very hard and you feel the slightest bump in the road.
