Question Tyre Insurance?

My car is at kwik Fit having new boots fitted. £600 for goodyear nct5's. The current ones have only done 10,000 miles and my Mrs was not impressed when Mr Kwik Fit told her they should last 30,000! I've had a quick search around the forums and I see that one or two people have mentioned tyre insurance. I've had a look online and can't find such a thing. Is it possible for me to get some kind of insurance to avoid future domestic squabbles? The alternative is to drive more carefully, but that's not why we bought the car!

I don't know. They are standard MCSC Bullet wheels. Think they're 17".
I am in the Barnsley/Sheffield area. Who fitted yours?

10K for a set of 4 ( I take it you swapped front to back at some point ) is pretty good going. I am on target for double that after swapping at 10k. The fronts wer at about 3.5mm and the rears were like brand new.

Mine are Dunlops which apparently are the pick of the bunch for run flats.

Think i'm going to get the same Dunlops in non run flat once due.......at a very reasonable £360ish fitted.

Oh and £40 for compressor and sealant from fleabay

57 Plate R56 PW/B MCS JCW Tuning Kit, Black R105's custom polished black, JCW Carbon fibre, JCW Recaro leather seats, Forge boost tube, Miltek DP, Factory JCW airbox & inlet pipe. Alta Panel filter, NM Eng engine mount. JCW Rear ARB

17's - for £600 ?

I think your mrs has reason to be angry, not at Kwik-fit, but at you

"Kwik-fit saw you coming" as they say

Is it not common knowledge that kwik-fit are the choice of company car owners who don't pay their own fees ?

...Who fitted mine? I think his name was Dave.

Cheers,
K.

£600 for runflats on 17s is not that bad (not great either - but runflats are really expensive.)

The cheapest i've seen is £110 each (excl fitting) on mytyres for the pirellis.

I see that the current R56 Dunlop sport 01 tyres are now available on Blackcricles for £149 each fitted!! Ouch!

I only got about 10k per set out the pirelli runflats, some toyo proxes t1rs (crap btw), and now expect about the same from the dunlop sp sport 01s on my R56S.

Think mine has something to do with some fairly spirited driving and the fact that there are 10 roundabouts each way on my way to work! If you spend a lot of time on motorways, then I expect that you would get a lot more miles out of tyres.

I do about 10k per year, so if i get the dunlop runflats to replace them, it will be costing me £50 per month on tyres!! which seems a bit steep! Think I will be going non-runflat (perhaps the F1s 215/40/17, or maybe even bridgestone REO40 or REO50, continental sports contact 2/3 in oem size. Probably cost more like £400

Anyway....

Back to the thread! If you can insure against tyres lasting for 10k I would be amazed! For my driving, this is just how long they last!

You can get tyre insurance if you want to insure agains accidental damage. This will repay you a percentage of the vale of the tyre based on tread wear so only really worth having if you drive in the gutter and continually kerb your tyres and pick up lots of punctures. It WILL NOT cover you for tread wear.

May I suggest accelerating slower. Braking for corners well in advance and the judicious use of flat cap, pipe and no indicators.

So in answer - tyre insurance is not waht you need or want - i bet KWAK FAT wanted to sell you some though as they may a lovely big bonus on that I feel!!!

Please don't leave the thread! I had a flat tyre which they have replaced, but the others need replacing as well now. They can't do that till after the weekend.

What are the pros and cons of runflat? What I want is something that remains legal as long as possible. Although I like to drive in a spirited fashion I am happy to have something less grippy if it lasts longer. I'm not going for lap times or racing against anyone. Basically I want to be able to push the car, but leave as little rubber on the road as possible.

Thanks

if you are not bothered in grip, and just the cost of the tyre (or replacing it), then i'd go with some £50 budget tyres. Check out the tyre forum for more details on what makes last longest....

K.
