R90 Alloy Wheels With Normal Tyres

just put some R90 17 inch alloy wheels on my mini one with normal tyres on and a flashing orange light as appeared on the speedo. I took it to the local dealers and they informed me I have to have run flat tyres with these wheels as there is a sensor in the wheel which as detected I don't have run flats hence the flashing light. Is there any way of stopping this apart from changing my tyres to run flat

I'm afraid that your dealer has told you a complete and utter load of rubbish.

The "fun flat" indicator is a part of the ABS system. It detects the rotation speed of the wheels, and if one or more is spinning faster than the others it assumes this is due to low pressure (fairly safe assumption!) and lights the flat tyre indicator.

It will do this if you have run-flats, non-run-flats or solid rubber tyres. It doesn't know or care what pressure or type of tyre you have, just they're all spinning at the same rate.

As for the "flashing orange light", is it flashing ALL the time? Is it on solid? Is it coming and going? If it is the runflat indicator, you'll just have to check your pressures and reset it (instructions in the manual, involves pressing a button). It could be a fault however. So a better description of the light and it's behaviour would help.

It's outragous some of the stuff "some" dealers come out with.

My dealer was surprised I hadn't swapped out my runflats for non-runflats already. They have done it a number of times and I was surprised that it was work that was carried out in-house.

Reset the TPMS:
  1. Ignition key in position 2
  2. Press the button long enough for the yellow indicator lamp in the instrument cluster to light up for a few seconds
  3. Start the engine.
After a few minutes driving time, the Flat Tire Monitor sets the current inflation pressure in the tires as the target values to be monitored.

Haha, most MINI nutters would be over qualified to actually work in the trade.
