Tire change: How often?

Hello,

Are there recommendations on how frequently one should change their tires/tyres? Any suggestions (either in Years or Miles) appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Ashton

You should replace tires when the tread wears out or the tires get too old.

The Tire Rack has two relevant articles in their Tire Tech section:
  1. Measuring Tire Tread Depth
  2. Tire Aging

Hi Miniac,

Outstanding-- thank you so much!
You're the same person who helped me earlier this week. Wow - you are a wealth of knowledge.

Thank you. I am printing the articles, and trying out the coin-test.

Just out of interest. In the US do tyres not come with the little blocks in the tread pattern that are set at the 2mm mark. Legal limit in the UK is 1.6mm so when they get near or reach the same level as the blocks you know it's time to change the tyres.

Or just buy a simple tread depth gauge. You can pick them up over here for a few pounds so I suspect you could get them in the US just as cheap. Forget about the digital ones, the mechanical ones are more accurate unless you spend a lot.

It was acceptable in the 80's
