Offline | Disclaimer for not fitting runflats Today I had my second set of 'ordinary' tyres fitted to my Cooper S. I was asked by the garage to sign a disclaimer absolving them of any responsibility for not fitting the reccomended runflats. The boss man then proceeded to tell me a horror story of how because S-lites are runflat rims that under heavy braking the tyre could slip on the rim and cut of the valve. It's not like he was trying to sell me the more expensive runflats as he'd already fitted the new ones. This has made me think now. Has anybody else on the board heard stories like this? I'm guessing that generally everyone's happy with tyres with a bit of give, I know I am. As an aside I fitted Toyos again. What a great tyre and from tryetraders they were V cheap too. Interested to know what you guys think, maybe put my mind at rest. |

Offline | To be honest he's talking rubbish. If the tyres ever slipped it had nothing to do with the Rim being a run flat. And preety sure even if it did it would not effect the valve. The runflats on a MINI are designed to fit ANY wheel, not specialist wheels. The design of S lites I think has a lip to increase the amount of air over a normal wheel to improve the ride. Not even sure it has that to be honest. ![]() |

Offline | Strangely enough I was talking to the guy at Camskill today as I ordered 2 new tyres, and he asked me if I wanted runflat tyres and what wheels I was running on the car as runflats and 'aftermarket wheels' don't mix! Perhaps there is some truth (or rumour mongering in it) after all... As it was I ordered 2 standard tyres anyway, so didn't persue it with him | MINIaddiction | | For MIDLANDS Folk in their MINI's | |

Online | Actually wheels have what is called a hump profile ... a bump put on the bead seat to prevent the tire from sliding off the wheel while the vehicle is moving. To ensure a run flat tire does not come off a wheel when running with zero pressure, the wheel must have a EH2 or EH2+ hump profile. |

Offline | Thanks guys, I'll take it that he was talking rubbish. Up until then I've always felt 100% confident that I could chuck my MIN in at 10/10ths and it would come out the other side, and he put a doubt in my mind, but that's gone now. |

| Formerly HUMPH | My experience is this. OEM rims and none run flats - No problem, and never heard of anyone with one. Have heard lots of stories of tyre fitters talking nonsense about using non runflats though. Aftermarket rims and runflats - Depends on the rim and runflats. The quote below is a post I made some time ago when I was hoping to use the run flats that came on my new MINI on aftermarket alloys. The technical people can hopefully fill us in on humps and extended humps. ![]() |

Offline | So you CAN use a runflat with an aftermarket rim, but don't expect it to work as a runflat when it goes flat. Can't be an issue when its working as a normal tyre fully inflated ![]() ![]() |
