| MINI2 Regular | Brake Probs Hi All Help and advice needed I recently 'upgraded' brakes all round to grooved and drilled discs and Mintex Xtreme pads both front and rear (both components) - sensors were also changed. Great. Braking wise - the car stops - but not sure if I bedded them in properly or not but they squeal something awful - so bad I have to put the window up and turn the music up! Its darn embarassing. They squeal towards final braking more than anything, and sometimes sound like they are going to fall apart. Stopping from speed is ok - and quite good. The squeal then goes away while the brakes are 'hot' so to speak. I contacted Mintext in the UK and a helpful chap is sending me some heavy duty shims (which I have no idea what they are!) and said they should help. Just wondered if anyone else had come across this prob or if it sounds rather serious and I should take the car to a garage to get the brakes checked out? Thanks for any advice offered Min |

| proper-S | hi are the pads ceramic? i recently fitted ceramic pads to my cooper s and they squel in the bedding in period and once they are really hot! i once used mintex pads on my old pulsar and they very noisey once i had cooked the brakes before bedding them in properly, hav you heated the brakes up to smoking point since you fitted them? the other cause of new pads making a noise can be a build up of dust on the friction face causing the pads/discs to heat up, but i can see how this could happen on grooved and drilled discs due to there allways being somewhere for the dust to go! i hope this helps clarky |

Offline | I had the same with some old Kevlar Pads a while ago.... noisy as hell even when bedded in. Are you sure they are bedded in? Have you done lots of braking for the last 500miles or so? often performance pads take much longer to bed in? Id try the braking pretty hard from 60mph to almost stopped and then again, drive for a minute to cool and then repeat again to see if that works. |

| MINI2 Regular | I've seen an audi with heavy duty shims (like thin pads which stick to the back of brake pads) - which apparently help reduce the sqeaul greatly - I have some from the Mintex brake distributors in the UK - I'll have them fitted and let you know how I get on. Audi's generally have fantastic brakes - at least my fiance's TT does!!! |

Offline | From what I know it's a common problem with performance pads. The Ferodo DS2500 squeal lots too, especially when they are not heated and if the braking is not strong. I recommend using copper grease on the pads to reduce the noise, people I know have completely eliminated it with this trick. |
