United-States lost "key" for factory wheels...

folks,

it looks like I no longer have the little cast metal widget-thing that allows me to remove the locking nut from my factory wheels...

what do I actually call this thing? is it a key?
and can I purchase a replacement somewhere? (if so, what's to stop someone buying one and helping themself to my wheels?)

David...

I can only assume that it is the same over there as it is in the UK....

Over here it is usually quicker to order a new set of locking wheelnuts, with the 'key' that comes with them, than it is to get a replacement key for the ones already fitted to the car.

All dealers have a master set, so will be able to swap them over for you.

As for someone else being able to buy a key that fits your wheels? If you knew how few variations there actually are of locking wheelnuts you'd be more worried!

OK, that makes sense, except... how do I get the current locks off?

Get your dealer to do it with their master set...

...didn't I already say that?

Had the same problem. Went to the dealer, where they identified the lock key number using the master key set, ordered the lock key (I had to pre-pay for it, 14.50 pound), a week later it arrived. Easy.

I did the same - then the dealer pointedout the little hole by the battery housing in the boot where the original one was sitting I had looked there too, but just did not see it
